Published On : 05 Sep 2024

Bermuda is an island paradise that is situated in the Atlantic Ocean approximately 1,046 kilometers from the state of North Carolina. Bermuda boasts pink sand beaches, beautiful towns, and a distinct culture; thus, more than 500 000 tourists visit the island annually. However, before you begin the process of making your dream Bermuda vacation a reality, you will need to familiarize yourself with the entry and passport requirements. So where do you need a passport to travel to?

To answer the question in the shortest form, it is yes, the US citizens require a valid passport when traveling to and from Bermuda. It is important to note here that Bermuda is a British Overseas Territory but it has its own immigration policies that are not common with that of United Kingdom. It is mandatory for Americans to have a passport since Bermuda does not allow any other form of identification, be it citizenship documents or any other photo identification such as driver’s license, voter’s ID etc.

Passport Validity Requirements

It is mandatory for the passport to be valid for at least 45 days after the expected date to leave Bermuda and the US. As such, if you are to holiday in Bermuda for a week, your passport should not expire for at least 52 days from the day you arrive. Children and infants also require passports with legitimate documents, though in case of renewal services, the regulations depend on the age.

Application Process

If you do not have a passport yet, you should apply for it some weeks or, ideally, several months before the planned journey. Normal turnaround time for application processing is between 4 to 6 weeks; however, expedited services can be requested at an extra cost. If you meet the requirements for renewal by mail, you will fill Form DS-82. First time applicants are required by law to appear physically at an Acceptance Facility/Passport Agency and complete Form DS-11. The current fee for a regular adult passport book featuring your photo and personal details is $165 plus an acceptance fee of $35.

Entry and Exit Requirements

In addition to your valid passport from the United States you will also need to present your return or onward ticket in order to confirm that you have no intention of over-staying. You may also be required to provide other related details and confirmation of your place to stay such as hotel or any other form of lodging. As mentioned earlier, no visa is required but the visitors is only allowed to stay for a maximum of ninety days on a single visit. The passport will be stamped and the stay duration indicated that should not be exceeded.

If you are an American citizen, you do not need a visa to enter Bermuda. Still, the citizens of other countries such as Canada, U.K, and E.U may have different documents and visa requirements.

Covid-19 Travel Protocols

At the moment, Bermuda has several other requirements for entry since the period of the pandemic, and one of them is a passport. In February 2023, every person aged two and above has to obtain a Travel Authorization through the Bermuda Travel Authorization website at least 48 hours before the journey. It costs $75 per adult and it entails completing a health questionnaire.

You also have to present a valid and adequate health insurance policy of Bermuda that covers COVID-19 treatment, hospitalization, and quarantine. Quarantine is no longer required although you may be required to take a test upon arrival if showing symptoms and possibly quarantining. COVID insurance is not mandatory for children who are 11 years old and below. The unvaccinated travelers should also be aware that they are subjected to much more rigorous isolation and testing measures.

Some of these health related measures are dynamic and therefore it is advisable to check the current Bermuda government measures before travelling. To get the latest information, it is recommended to visit the pages of Bermuda Tourism Authority and U.S. Consulate in Bermuda.

Lost Passport? Here’s What You Need To Do If Your Passport Has Been Compromised.

Everyone knows that getting a passport is quite a complicated process and losing, stealing, or damaging a passport while traveling in a foreign country is not a pleasant experience. When you report your lost passport and complete all the necessary forms, the consulate can provide you with an emergency travel document/passport to travel back to your home country. Unfortunately, getting a replacement for your lost or damaged passport is not a free process in Bermuda and you are likely to encounter some fees along the way. Travel insurance typically compensates customers for such incidental expenses while on foreign trips so that’s one way of recovering the costs.

The Bottom Line

As for the documents, there is not much preparation in advance when it comes to booking those flights to beautiful Bermuda. This is in contrast to visiting certain countries where American tourists will have to wait for their visas to be approved for a long time. However, all US citizens require a valid passport as per Bermudian immigration requirements before they can travel. Plan ahead by applying for passports as early as possible if any of the members of your group does not have a passport. It does this to make sure that there is no rush causing you to either delay or cancel your wonderful island trip all together. And having your important travel documents in place more than two months before your travel time means you can concentrate on more fun trip planning such as travelling by sea, playing golf, diving, and checking out the folklore of the dazzling Bermuda’s famous pink sand beach.

So prepare yourself to have a passport handy to gain access to all the joys that this island destination has to present! With nonstop flights just a few hours away, Bermuda’s stunning greenery, turquoise waters, and vibrant history are all waiting to be explored.
