Do You Need A Travel Visa For Spain?

Spain is one of the top touristic countries in Europe, offering its visitors a unique experience with history, architecture, gastronomy, and cities. Spain, being one of the members of the European Union, is also part of the Schengen Area which entails the absence of restrictions on the movement of people across 26 countries. This means that many people can travel to Spain without a visa. However, the visa requirements vary depending on the country of citizenship of the applicant.

Tourist and business visa: Citizens of the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA), or Switzerland do not require a visa to enter Spain for any purpose and any period. You only require identification in the form of a passport or a national ID card.

The citizens of the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and many of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean do not require a visa for tourism or business purposes for a period of up to 90 days. Singapore, South Korea, Malaysia, and Israel are some of the countries whose citizens do not require a visa to visit Spain. The only thing you should ensure is that your passport should have at least 3 months’ validity remaining after your planned date of return.

But which nationalities require a Spanish visa? There are some countries from where citizens require visas before coming to Spain, some of these are India, China, Russia, Turkey, and South Africa among others.

Types Of Spain Visas

If you do need a visa to enter Spain, there are different types depending on the purpose and duration of stay.

Business Visa: For business meetings, conventions, trade shows, etc. Valid for up to three months.
Work Visa: For employment and resident permits.
Student Visa: Long stay for higher studies/university.
Transit Visa: In case you have a connecting flight in Spain to another destination.
Airport Transit Visa: For transferring from one flight to another without having to exit the airport.
Medical Treatment Visa: Medical tourism – receiving patients for long periods to be treated in specialized clinics.

Spain Tourist Visa Application

To obtain your Spanish Schengen visa, you need to visit your nearest Spanish consulate or embassy and schedule an interview. It is advised to apply for the visa at least two weeks before the date of intended travel but it is better to apply much earlier. Here are the main steps.

1. Fill in the Schengen visa application form on the Internet.

2. Gather supporting visa documents including passport, proof of accommodation, financial evidence, medical insurance, flight reservation, etc.

3. Take photographs and fingerprints at the consulate.

4. Pay the visa fee. This is non-refundable even if the visa is rejected.

5. Go for an interview at the consulate if you are needed to do so.

6. Wait for processing. In most cases, a decision is made within fifteen calendar days.

7. If approved – Come for the passport containing the Visa from the consulate. Ensure that specific information is correct.

Visa Extension In Spain

It is important to note that tourists cannot increase their allowed stay from 90 days with the Schengen visa. You will have to exit the Schengen area after the duration of your stay in the Schengen zone. Staying in Spain for more than 90 consecutive days, one is supposed to apply for a National visa (type D visa) or residence permit. Ask an immigration attorney about the requirements for entry into the country.
