As referred to as the ‘City of Romance’ in China, Zhuhai is clean, tropical, and has a laid-back feel to it. While conventional attractions like the beaches and islands get a lot of attention, people do not know that the neighborhoods of Zhuhai can also offer a lot that is yet to be explored. Enclosed herein are seven of the most popular neighborhoods in Zhuhai for any traveler who would love to taste the local culture.
Tangjiawan is Zhuhai’s leading historical and cultural community based on the results of the survey. It has several scenic attractions like ancient temples, historic structures, and museums, which showcase old Zhuhai before the coming of the new infrastructure. Some famous sights to visit are the Yuanming Temple, an ancient temple that was built 700 years ago as well as the Zhuhai Museum which illustrates the history of the city. This is a district in which ancient homes and shops are preserved, and there are small shops selling handicrafts and antiques; try wandering through Tangjiawan and visiting some of the old alleys. This history center helps one learn all about Zhuhai which was once a port city dating back to ancient times.
To complete this picture of modern Zhuhai, you can go to Bar Street located in the central district of Gongbei. This is a pedestrian street that becomes alive at night since many young locals and visitors patronage over 300 bars, pubs, and clubs by pouring drinks late into the night. A vibrant nightlife entertainment area, it boasts neon lights and provides a variety of choices from DJ parties to jazz clubs. There is nothing like tasting the locally produced wine at any bar and while at it, enjoy the vibrant lifestyle of Zhuhai.
Retreat to Yuanming New Garden, an ancient architectural and garden complex with a classical Chinese design. Designed in the architectural form of the Old Summer Palace of Beijing, the site is home to Yiyun Temple, the magnificent imperial flower gardens, and a museum displaying relics from the Qing dynasty. You should also carry along comfortable shoes because the castle and its surroundings are huge and will need a whole day to tour. With hills, lakes, and pavilions at every turn – certainly, it is not a place where you would find yourself in the middle of other tourists. The show at the Golden Lake Musical Fountain is also highly recommended and takes place daily.
An absolute must-see for any traveler in Zhuhai is the Fisher Girl statue, which is the symbol of this city. It is present close to the lovers’ road of Yeli Island and facing the Macau skyline and it is that of a fisher girl waiting for her lover and she holds a teddy bear. It has now become symbolic of Zhuhai and serves as the lovers’ corner and photoshoot destination for couples, and newlyweds. It is best to visit once the sun is setting because of the good lighting that can be used as a background particularly the direction of the statue and the horizon of the sea.
Calling all design lovers! The Qinghuangdao Glass Park is a uniquely glass-dedicated district, filled with glass art. Here you will see the Zhuhai International Glass Design Center where you can view stunning glass designs from all over the world. On the exterior, the streets and the different plazas are adorned with magnificent glass creations from large glowing tunnels to abstract glass hills. It is recommended not to skip getting photographed with some of the structures like the 8.5m glass guitar or even the glass building blocks. The imagination can run wild and free in this enchanting place for children and parents.
A visit to Meixi Village along the river is advisable to experience some of the traditional southern Chinese architectures that feature elaborate stone gates. More than a hundred of the antique stone archways of the Ming and Qing periods still exist in the granite and marble buildings on the streets and bridges. Every carved archway entrance has a narrative of the village and its inhabitants and the families who constructed them out of their newly acquired stones, boasting of their riches. The most distinctive feature is the ‘Last Great Arch’, which is seen as the last mega arch constructed before the empire’s demise in 1920.
