Istanbul is a city that is amazing with its beautiful structures like the Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Grand Bazaar, and many others. However, numerous little-known interesting places within the city are usually not promoted by tour agents but are a must-see for those willing to explore beyond the most popular tourist sites in Istanbul. That is why I have prepared a list of five secretly amazing places in Istanbul you should not skip on your next visit!

1. Fener and Balat Neighborhoods
Although Fener and Balat are today filled with tourists, they were inhabited by the Greek, Jewish, and Armenian people before the Ottomans arrived. Stroll around the vivid, steeped alley paved with cobblestones with traditional wooden houses, ancient churches such as the Patriarchate of Constantinople, small cafés, and artisanal shops. One can also visit the Fener Greek Orthodox College which is a seminary in operation since 1454 and perhaps the oldest university in Turkey. Head up into the hills to take great pictures and enjoy the breathtaking view of the Golden Horn.

2. Kuzguncuk
Kuzguncuk is located on the Asian side of Istanbul, a beautiful neighborhood on the Bosphorus, which makes one feel that he/she is in a different world from the noisy city. Often referred to as “Little Utopia”, tree-lined streets with superb neo-vernacular wooden houses in Ottoman-Greek style lead down to the sea where visitors can sit in a water-front café and sip tea. Visit the small galleries and the shops selling local souvenirs, handmade crafts, and other unique items. The mosque and the synagogue next to it are a true testament to this; this is the magic neighborhood we are talking about.

3. Göztepe Terrace
If you are looking for one of the best panoramic views of Istanbul, then the Göztepe Terrace in the Göztepe Rose Garden should be the right place to be. It is located on one of the city’s highest geographic points and it provides spectacular panoramic views that include the Bosphorus, Princes Islands, Golden Horn, and the skyline of the Old City. This kind of viewpoint usually receives fewer tourists compared to other lookout points because it is not situated on the standard sightseeing tour — but still, it offers spectacular views!

4. Yedikule Fortress
While the marvelous Yedikule Castle standing by the city walls of the world’s most visited city Istanbul is a rare site, it is hardly famous compared to other iconic attractions in Istanbul. The castle was constructed in the 5th century and there are many legends and stories associated with it — it has been used as an armory, mint, and prison. Have a walk through the mostly empty parapets to get great looks at the Sea of Marmara and the nearby Golden Horn; marvel at the still-standing towers and gates inside; and visit the outdoor eating establishments in the grassy moat surrounding the entire structure.

5. Hidiv Pavilion
Nested in the quiet area of Yoğurtçu Park, and quite close to the Grand Bazaar we discover the pink building Hidiv Pavilion of rich wooden architecture. Originally designed as an imperial hunting lodge of Sultan Abdul Hamid II in 1907, this beautiful structure has been converted to accommodate the arts center and a photography gallery. Enjoy a cup of Turkish tea at the café located in the building and marvel at the craftsmanship of the wooden carvings and the serene park the building is in. That is something that you could easily snap a photo of whether it be from the outside or from within.

It is best to go deeper into its relatively unknown areas and explore some of the most amazing sights that this wonderful city has to offer.
