Renowned beach resort Playa del Carmen is located in the Riviera Maya portion of the Mexican Caribbean's ocean shoreline. Playa del Carmen, well-known for its white sand beaches and shoreline, coral reefs, active nightlife, and resort hotels, is well located for many other great locations to explore. The nine best sites of interest and activities below are close to Playa del Carmen.
Just 10 minutes from Playa del Carmen, Xcaret is a huge leisure area devoted to Mexican history and environment. On your tour, check the underground rivers of the park, natural lagoons, beaches, tropical gardens, unusual fish tanks, and birdhouses. Watch live Mexican folk dance; swim amid the sea's coral; and play with dolphins. With more than fifty attractions, Xcaret Park may be mostly seen as an educational center as well as an entertainment venue for families and kids.
Thirty minutes' drive south of Playa del Carmen, the Tulum Ruins are an incredible fortification city of Mayan civilization perched on the cliff top commanding breathtaking views over the Caribbean seas. See the perfectly maintained houses and the sea at Tulum and its magnificent archeological site. Playa Paraiso and Playa Ruinas are two more lovely beaches close by that one may enjoy.
This is so because the Riviera Maya is endowed with hundreds of exquisite cenotes—natural wells—filled with glistening clean water. From Playa del Carmen, a day journey to explore some of the most well-known cenotes on the main road will take one to Gran Cenote, Cenote Azul, and Cenote Suytun. Good for swimming, snorkeling, and diving, they are subterranean odd cavernues with limestone structures.
One of the New 7 Wonders of the World, Chichen Itza is a well-known and historical city two ½ ½ hours journey west of Playa del Carmen on this full-day trip. Seeing this massive Mayan metropolis, founded in the fifth century AD, has been a delight. See the massive step pyramid known as El Castillo, the ball court, the Temple of Warriors, and the El Caracol observatory and be in wonder.
To reach the third biggest island in Mexico, Isla Cozumel, spend around forty-five minutes on a boat across the strait. Particularly well-known for reef diving, Cozumel's underwater attractions provide a range of stunning locations filled with aquatic life. Get off the mainland and see some of the island beaches, ruins, or downtown.
For the daring visitor, the calm island of Isla Mujeres is reachable from Playa del Carmen by a thirty-minute ferry trip. Hiring a golf cart or scooter can let you tour this little island with visits to the sandy beaches, eateries, and stores. See the many reefs of the island or dive by the underwater sculpture museum.
Coba, one of the biggest Mayan settlements in the Yucatan, located about 45 miles or 70 kilometers inland from Playa del Carmen buried deep in the forest. The tallest pyramid to see the amazing vistas of the tropical Guatemala vegetation is Ascend Nohoch Mul. Some go to Coba because of its expansive territory with many stone causeways and buildings—not as crowded as one might think.
With an estimated 800 kinds of flora and 900 species of animals, including jaguars, pumas, crocodiles, monkeys, ocelots, and over 300 species of birds, Sian Ka'an is a world heritage site—a 5300 square kilometer protected area rich biosphere reserve. With a guide, visitors can only tour a tiny area of the biosphere; they spend a day boat-driven over subversive lagoons and marshes.
This lagoon, which is in Mexico and is often referred to as "The Lagoon of Seven Colors," glows in blue and green tones because of the limestone beneath the water. Nestled 90 minutes south of Playa del Carmen and along the shore of this stunning freshwater lagoon lies the little hamlet Bacalar. One may go for a swim, relax on a boat, or stroll around the remains of the forts while visiting the island.
