Tourism in Cebu Island in the Philippines has become very attractive for tourists with a lot of sights and interesting activities. With elegant sandy white beaches, culturally significant historical landmarks, extreme sports for adventurous souls, and mouth-watering Filipino cuisines for food connoisseurs, Cebu has something unique to offer to every traveler. Below is a brief on the main attractions and things of interest that cannot be overlooked by any traveler visiting Cebu.
Magellan's Cross
Another historical place that must be visited in Cebu is the Magellan’s Cross which is made of wood with an inscription that it was planted in Cebu by Ferdinand Magellan in the year 1521 to represent Spain’s sovereignty over the place. The original cross is covered by another cross made of hallow tindalo wood but for many, it remains a symbol of Christianity in the Philippines as Cebu was instrumental in the spread of the Christian faith in the country.
Temple of Leah
This huge temple located in Cebu City, Philippines is not as religious as people may think it is, it is a structure erected by a businessman in honor of his deceased wife. Leah’s Temple has as many as twenty-four rooms, which are going to be adorned with artworks and sculptures. The grounds of the temple also provide one with a breathtaking view of Cebu City and the adjacent hills. It is not an antique site but it has attracted more tourist traffic since its discovery.
Oslob Whale Shark Watching
The boat tour that provides close encounters with the gentle giants of the ocean is among the most loved activities in Cebu. One tourist destination is whale watching, this is a small town of Oslob in the southern part of Cebu where tourists are allowed to swim with the whale sharks in the wild. However, please do not try to touch them which are great for gifts or celebrations.
Sumilon Island
If it is white sand beaches and barrier coral reefs, then proceed directly to Sumilon Island located off the southeast end of the island of Cebu. This protected marine sanctuary boasts some of the finest sandy shores and underwater locations in the province. Another engagement has to do with swimming, snorkeling, beach bouncing, or simply enjoying the feel of island life for the whole day.
Canyoneering in Badian
For all the risk-takers, a canyoneering adventure through the dense forest and the plunging waterfalls some 40 kilometers south of Badian on the western side of Cebu is one of the best. You will be even rappelling on cliffs, leaping into crystal clear water and even swimming in the torrents. It is an actual thriller full of adrenaline rush and beautiful nature along with numerous entertainment. Simply, opt for only guided tours, and it is still possible to choose only licensed guides for security and ecological concerns.
Sirao Garden
Developed to be a site to which farmers could welcome visitors, Sirao Garden in Cebu City has now become one of the most popular spots for photography with very beautiful flower beds on the territory of the multi-level ground. This is even more so when celosia flowers are in full bloom thus making an attractive sight to capture through camera. If you want to capture the best photos possible, then you need to go from November to March when it blooms the most.
Mactan Island Hopping
It’s impossible to visit Cebu and not spend a day touring the island on board a boat around Mactan island's white beaches and reefs. Commonly, island hopping tours let you set foot on various islands in a day, for instance, Nalusuan Island has stunning beaches and the Hilutungan Marine Sanctuary has excellent coral gardens. The usual activities are lunch, which is served as a buffet on the boat, and breaks to swim, snorkel, and frolic on the beach.
The site chosen for the project is located in the heart of Cebu – Colon Street and the downtown area.
Roaming around the cobbled sidewalks of the downtown area of Cebu displays the true essence of the city’s Spanish influence. Visit the oldest street in the Philippines known as Colon Street where most of the heritage structures are seen as commercial establishments including shops and restaurants. Be sure to also drop by some of the historic sites such as Basilica Minore del Santo Niño church and Fort San Pedro when you are discovering the downtown area.
Lechon and Street Food
Cebu is famously associated with delicious food, so it is advisable not to limit yourself to the number of meals consumed during your stay. Seafood is a must-try, together with the popular roasted suckling pig and dried mangoes if you are in Cebu. There are also quick snacks in the form of siomai, ampao, and chicharon being sold side by street food sellers in and around the city.
Whether you love snorkeling in amazing colored coral reefs and jungle waterfalls or swimming with whale sharks, visiting historic sites, tasting incredible food, and relaxing on the country’s many stunning beaches, there is so much to see and do in Cebu. This list is intended to serve as a helpful starting point for further explorations of everything this province has to offer. The only thing I would like to remind you, guys, is to bring your camera, swimming suit, and your tummy with you!
