What Is A Travel Visa?

A travel visa is an endorsement or document which is placed in a person’s passport to allow him or her to enter, leave or stay in a country for a certain period of time. Visas are official stamped or electronic documents that allow a person to enter, work or stay in a foreign country and are issued by governments. There are several types of travel visas.

Tourist Visa

A tourist visa is an immigration permit issued to a foreign visitor to enable him or her go on a holiday or sightseeing in another country for a limited time. It commonly allows only one entry for as long as up to 90 days. Business Visa

A business visa is a visa that allows the holder to temporarily enter a country for business related activities such as attending meetings, conferences, training, or to negotiate contracts. For this, you will need to present documents proving the existence of your home business and the purpose of the trip. Multiple entries are allowed for business visas for a period of 3-12 months. Some of the most visited countries for business are China, India, and the United Kingdom.

Work Visa

If you wish to get a job in other countries then you may be required to obtain a work visa or permit that legally enable one to seek employment and earn an income in that country. They differ significantly but generally encompass a legitimate job offer, sponsorship by an employer in the country of intended stay, education and work experience, no criminal records, and good health. Career visas are common for those in search of employment in Australia, Singapore, and other developed countries.

Student Visa

Student visas allow foreign students to gain admission to an academic institution for full-time learning. Transit Visa

A few countries also may require a transit visa if you have a layover on your way to your intended country, even if you are not leaving the airport. You are required to present your passport, booking of the next destination, confirmed reservation of accommodation, and a visa of the country you intend to visit last. It depends on the rule regarding airport transfers but most of the connecting flights necessitate this means of transport especially when the transit airports are used frequently such as Dubai, Doha, Frankfurt and London.

Electronic Visa/eVisa

An eVisa or electronic visa is the online application process which is available in more than 50 countries in the world now. Passengers fill an online form with identity and passport scan and will be electronically notified the Letter of Approval to travel. eVisas ease the process and may take only up to 1-3 days of processing time for approval. Other countries such as Turkey, Sri Lanka, and those in East Africa use them to ease visa requirements.

Applying for a Visa

The approval duration takes about a week to a couple of months depending on the company or government institution involved.
