Where To Travel In January?

Published On : 20 Aug 2024

There is nothing wrong with travelling in January, just that the destinations must be chosen correctly. Some people believe that it is impossible to travel in January because of the cold weather, but that actually means that tourists can visit warm climates when other tourists are not there and prices are high. Or you can choose to have a warm and toasty winter wonderland kind of trip.

Here are some of the top places to consider for your January travels

Thailand

Thailand has a good weather in January because it is the cool season with temperature ranges between 26-29°C along the coast and slightly lower in the mainland. There are no signs of rain in the country side, so the vegetation is thick and green. The ocean waters are still bath water warm thus this is a good season to engage in sun basking or snorkeling activities.

Even though Thailand begins to lure more and more tourists in winter, January is a part of the shoulder season here, and that is why hotel rates in such places as Bangkok, Phuket, or Chiang Mai, for instance, are still reasonable, and crowding is not as dent as in late winter. Beach lovers should avoid the northern areas of the country as it has cooler temperatures up there.

Australia

Experience Australian summer in January while you are there. It is summer vacation time and the climate is balmy with temperatures ranging from 70 degrees Fahrenheit at the shores. Stay in bustling Sydney as it enjoys a summer day by sunbathing on the famous Bondi Beach or discover new trendy districts and numerous cafes. Then proceed to the Reef to snorkel or dive amidst the colourful coral gardens and other marine life on the Great Barrier Reef which is considered one of the natural wonders of the world.

January is also festival time in Australia and festivals such as the Sydney Festival featuring theatre, dance, music and visual arts for three weeks. Or watch the Australian Open Grand Slam tennis championship which attracts the fans across the globe. There are so many things that occur in January meaning it is the best time to visit Australia.

Costa Rica

This is a perfect destination for nature lovers, beach lovers and lovers of adventure activities as it has rainforests, beaches and activities like bungee jumping and others, perfect for the January holiday especially for those from North America who are likely to be out of school. January is in the middle of the dry season and there is very little rain while the days are clear and the vegetation is thick and healthy.

Enjoy your days hiking through the rainforests and volcanoes, and nights camping near the jungle waterfalls to swim in. Have an adventure by zipline through the treetop, learn to surf or just relax on some of the world’s most beautiful beaches. Just be ready for people everywhere especially if you plan to visit the most popular sites in Costa Rica since January is the high season.

The Caribbean

The Caribbean islands are absolutely perfect in January. The weather will be warm tropical, with temperatures in between 26 and 29 degrees Celsius, and you will also get the opportunity to travel during off-season since it will not be Christmas/New Year or spring break. Usually, flights and resort rates are more reasonable during this season.

Choose an attractive island, such as Jamaica because of the unique dishes, colorful people and beautiful landscapes. Or select a low-profile location such as Aruba that offers fabulous beaches, nature, and beautiful sunsets. Regardless of your location within the Caribbean, January is an optimal time to visit these beautiful islands.

Lapland, Finland

To really feel the winter wonderland, go to Lapland in Finland, where snow blankets the land for over two hundred days annually. Slide down the snow behind huskies, follow a dancing Northern Lights across the night sky or even meet Mr. Santa during Christmas and New Year when the winter is at its best.

Although you might have missed the Christmas celebration, winter in Lapland is equally enchanting; you can go sledging with reindeer, travel across the frozen lakes on snow mobile and even spend a night in an igloo made of glass. Expect to experience temperatures that hover around zero below freezing, but upon returning from playing in the Arctic snow and sitting by a fireplace, it is truly a part of the Lapland experience.

Patagonia, Chile/Argentina

January is summer in the Southern Hemisphere and therefore perfect to visit Patagonia where you may track the Andes mountain range across the borders of Chile and Argentina. It is Argentina’s hottest and driest month where magnificent glaciers, sapphire lakes and snow clad mountains are inviting to trek before the onset of tourism rush.

Ride a horse on a chilean estancia, marvel at the stunning Perito Moreno glacier, trek on the Torres del Paine National Park to see great mountain views, and taste wonderful wines in ripened vineyards. No matter if you are an admirer of tranquility or thrill-seeker, there is no doubt that your dream summer experience is in Patagonia.

India

For culture, history and vibrant urban energy, India shines in January when cooler temperatures make exploring much more pleasant. Winter in North India can be quite harsh but tourist hotspots like Kerala and Goa are in low 70s and are in the peak tourist period.

Relax on the beaches of Goa, float on the traditional houseboats in Kerala, visit the historical part of Old Goa, and taste spicy curries and aromatic chai tea. The weather is pleasant during the month of January which makes India more vibrant and this is the best season to explore this fascinating country.

Morocco

Morocco has a relatively good and warm weather in January compared to the rest of Europe since this is their winter season. Visit medieval cities such as the blue-washed Chefchaouen city located at the backdrop of the Rif Mountain range. Explore the numerous narrow alleys of souks crisscrossing Marrakech, savor delicious tagines full of spices in local restaurants, and take a camel ride through vast sand dunes of the Sahara.

Since it is winter time, you will avoid the scorching heat and hordes of tourists that flock to Morocco when it’s summer. The absence of heat and humidity makes it perfect for handling busy urban environments or going on expeditions. Morocco can boast with its rich history, diverse culture, and beautiful landscapes; however, it truly blossoms in January.
