Ling Gwan Kiong

Ling Gwan Kiong

Located in Singaraja, the former capital of Bali, the Ling Gwan Kiong temple is a beautiful Chinese temple in North Bali. Built around 1873, the mini gardens and murals add to the aesthetic appeal while turtles roam freely around in the temple. Chinese deities are carved and hand-painted on the wooden gates, and the cultural markers of the Ching Dynasty make this a must-see. Locals refer to Ling Gwan Kiong as ‘klenteng’, a term used for Chinese Buddhist temples. Built in 1873, Ling Gwan Kiong bears a silent witness to the area’s colourful history. Situated in Buleleng regency of Bali, Makam Jayaprana is the famous grave of Jayaprana, the lover of Layonsari in a famous Balinese legend of romance. The place is regarded as sacred by the locals, especially couples. It's a 300-step climb up to the grave but ultimately leads to a gorgeous view of the surrounding ocean and West Bali National Park, and a deeper understanding of Balinese beliefs. The legend of Jayaprana, the adopted son of the king, was to marry Layonsari. However, the king turned out to be smitten by Layonsari himself and wanted to marry her. To see this ambition through, he had Jayaprana killed. Layonsari saw this in a vision and killed herself to avoid marrying the king instead of the love of her life. The Memorial Wall in Kuta, Bali commemorates the victims of the October 2002 bombing on Bali which killed 88 Australian tourists, 38 Indonesians and 27 Britons, among several others. A Wall of Names pays tribute to these victims, and people from all over the world come here to pay their respects. Memorial Wall is a unique attraction in Kuta that marks a tragic incident in the history of Bali. Three bomb blasts in the region on the 12th of October shook the world and took the lives of 202 people. The memorial wall is a permanent reminder of the attack.
