Overview of St. Mary's Basilica, Bangalore

Mary's Basilica, located in the heart of Bangalore, Karnataka, is a major cornerstone and a significant religious point. It stands as a splendid illustration of Gothic architecture, attracting callers and addicts from all over the world. Built in 1882, St. Mary's Cathedral is Bangalore's oldest church and the only church in the state to be elevated to minor edifice status. It's notorious for its festivals that take place during the Marian Festival in September each year. It's a stunning sight with its towering façade, stained glass windows, and statue of the Merciful Abecedarian Mary.

Mary's Cathedral is a commodious Gothic church in the shape of a crossdesigned by a French mastermind. It's 172 bases long and 50 bases wide. The imposing and magnific palace that forms the façade of the church is 160 bases high. A beautiful 6-foot-high altar-statue of the Virgin Mary holding the baby Jesus in her arms is placed in a seductive basilica directly in front of the church structure.

Our apprentice Mary is wrapped every day in a sari, the typical costume of Indian women. It's said that during the construction of the new church, an attempt to remove the statue in order to place it on a prominent balcony within the church failed as the statue remained motionless. This strange event is considered a sign of the miraculous power of the Abecedarian. The main jubilee of the church is celebrated with great pomp every year on September 8, the feast day of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. This jubilee is considered one of the most important by the people of the archdiocese and the entire state of Karnataka.
