Joan Miro Foundation
Joan Miro Foundation is a museum dedicated to modern art and is built to honor Joan Miro. It is located in Parc de Montjuïc. The foundation collection comprises 217 paintings, 178 sculptures, nine textiles, four ceramics, 8000 drawings, and almost all of Joan Miró's prints.
In 1968, Joan Miró, along with Joan Prats, built the foundation to encourage young artists to experiment with contemporary art. Josep Lluís Sert structured the architectural design of the building so that this work could also be exhibited and made available to the public. The foundation represents a new way of viewing the concepts of a museum and the cultural heritage of the people of Barcelona. Most of the collections were donated by the artist himself, and the rest came from collections owned by his wife, Pilar Juncosa. The foundation also paid tribute to Miró's death by placing contemporary art collections. The building was expanded in 1986, adding an auditorium and library holding 10,000 items in the Foundation and Miró's collection. The famous art collections include Alexander Calder's 4 Wings and Mercury Fountain. With Joan Miró's allegories and colourful patterns and shapes, his work has attracted the young generations, which is why the foundation is popularly known for organizing activities for kids. Inside the foundation, you can find a restaurant with a garden and magnificent city views which serve traditional Spanish and Catalan dishes. In 1904, Antonio Gaudí turned the modest building and created it into a spectacular icon of modernism, which today is called Casa Batlló, as the World Heritage of UNESCO. The building represents a calm sea, and it is the perfect expression of the genius Gaudí. This building symbolises the battle between Sant Jordi against the dragon. Casa de Lleó i Morera is the result of the reform of Lluís Domènech i Montaner. Around 40 craftsmen designed the decore of the building richly and profusely. Tourists can visit the inner courtyard, which has Barcelona's most beautiful preserved modernist interiors.
