Overview for Waitangi Treaty Grounds of Bay of Islands

The Waitangi Treaty Grounds, located in the Bay of Islands, is one of New Zealand's most significant historic sites. It is where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840 between the British Crown and over 500 Māori chiefs. This event marked the founding of the nation of New Zealand. The grounds offer a panoramic view of the bay, lush gardens, and historical buildings including the Treaty House, the Meeting House, and the Ceremonial War Canoe.

Architecture of Waitangi Treaty Grounds

The architecture at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds beautifully reflects both Māori and European influences. The Treaty House, originally the residence of British Resident James Busby, is one of the earliest examples of European building techniques in New Zealand. The Meeting House, known as Te Whare Rūnanga, represents traditional Māori craftsmanship and is a symbol of partnership between the two cultures. The grounds also feature a ceremonial war canoe (Waka), which is the world's largest, showcasing exquisite Māori carving skills.
