Topography of Terror is a historic site is situated on Niederkirchnerstrasse, a street in Berlin, Germany. Topographie des terrors also has been through phases of demolition and reconstruction in the past.
It is known since 1987 as the central site of management of Nazi crimes. The Nazi centre between 1933 -1945 housed SS Reich Main Security Office, a house prison and a leadership Police office of SS (Secret State). Today the centre sits next to Martin Gropius Building (an Exhibition centre) and at closer proximity to Potsdamer Platz. The house that also hosts Gestapo or Secret State Police got severely destroyed in 1945 by the Allied bombing. Later the terrain between American and Soviet sectors was leveled further and used by the recycling firm as a Dumping ground and a bumper car site. Bordered by Berlin Wall on the north, the terrain’s history was forgotten after pulling down of this historical site.Restoration plans started after a public interest steadily started growing in 1970, but the International Building Exhibition (IBA) was against construction on the grounds. Since the neighboring Martin-Gropius-Bau Exhibition centre was reconstructed on the former Museum of Industrial Arts and Crafts in 1981, the decision to restore Topographie des terrors was reconsidered. In 1983, Berlin Senate called for international design submissions for the site and with 194 design entries, one was selected. Berlin architects Jürgen Wenzel and Nikolaus Lang won the price for designing the site.In 1987 on Berlin’s 750 th anniversary celebrations the site opened its first exhibition for public viewing. With Gestapo headquarters renovation plans, the site that was once a place where prisoners were tortured was now built into a museum and memorial. Nazis control over prisoners and the oppressing history is exhibited in open air, protected by canopy-like structure here.
