Bishnupur Mela

The Bishnupur Mela is an annual fair held in the month of Poush of the Bengali Calendar and is held in the town of Bishnupur. It celebrates the cultural richness of the region, providing the attendees with a glimpse of how the traditional Bengali culture has witnessed change over time. It venerates the traditional music and dance of the state of West Bengal and provides the visitors a glimpse of the Bengali cultural heritage. When is the Bishnupur Mela Celebrated? Since the Poush Mela is celebrated on the seventh day of the month of Poush in the Bengali calendar, the Bishnupur Mela is organized around the same time. It is a four-day festival, and the dates for 2023 are from 27 December to 31 December. Stalls at the Bishnupur MelaSource The Bishnupur Mela is celebrated to mark the end of the agricultural season in the Bishnupur town of the Indian state of West Bengal. The festival is celebrated in the last week of December, around the same time as the Poush Mela in the town of Shantiniketan, thus has acquired the same name as Poush Mela. The early rulers of Bishnupur, who were locals of the land, paid tribute to the Gupta rulers and were in their patronage. Primarily, three rulers who ruled Bishnupur are considered to be the key contributors in making the place acquire its cultural, historical and religious significance. These were King Veer Hambir, and the kings who succeeded him, Raja Raghunath Singha Dev, and then King Bir Singha Dev. It was under their rule that Bishnupur saw the construction of significant terracotta temples. Built by Malla King Raghunath Singh in 1655 AD, The temple made of laterite bricks has an appearance of two thatched huts joined together and surmounted by a single tower. The temple's roofs and walls have classical Chala style of architecture in terracotta. The panels and walls depict the lives of the Royalty and stories from Epics.

This laterite eka-ratna temple was built in 1658 by Bir Singha II of Malla dynasty on a square raised plinth which consists of ornamental stucco decorations on low relief carvings.

This eka-ratna temple was built by Malla King Durjana Singh Dev in late 17th century that has a square flat roof with curved cornices and a pinnacle over the top. The Madan Mohan Temple was built by King Durjana Dev Singh, for his family deities of Radha and Krishna. It is one of the most renowned temples of Bishnupur.

Built by King Chaitanya Singha in 1758, the temple has a dome shaped sikhara with stucco motifs that depicts floral, geometric and life of puranas.

The oldest brick temple, Rasmancha was commissioned by Malla King Bir Hambir in 1600 CE. The temple has one inner chamber housing the idols of Radha-Krishna. It has an elongated tower encircled by turrets which are of hut shapes. It is enclosed by a passageway and there are some big cannons which date back to Malla period. The Vaishnava Ras festival was held till 1935 before it was converted to a protected monument.
