Cardamom Mountains Tourism

Nestled in the heart of Cambodia, the Cardamom Mountains stand as an untouched paradise, boasting lush landscapes and a rich tapestry of biodiversity. Towering peaks adorned with emerald greenery create a haven for adventurers seeking an escape from the mundane. This unexplored gem promises a unique blend of tranquilly and adventure, making it an ideal destination for those yearning for an off-the-beaten-path experience. The Cardamom Mountains, located in southwestern Cambodia, are a range known for their biodiversity, lush landscapes, and the opportunity for eco-tourism. The Cardamom Mountains are recognised as one of the most important biodiversity hotspots in Southeast Asia. The region is home to a wide variety of plant and animal species, including rare and endangered ones. Conservation efforts aim to protect this rich biodiversity.Although illicit harvesting and poaching are posing a threat to the Cardamom Mountains of Cambodia and its endangered flora and wildlife, the region's immense tropical rainforest nevertheless stands as one of Southeast Asia's most pristine wilderness areas. It's becoming simpler to visit the region because of recent access improvements and the creation of community-led programmes.

The region has a painful recent past and was formerly one of the final strongholds for Khmer Rouge warriors, much like the rest of Cambodia. Many of the troops escaped to the jungle when the Pol Pot-led regime fell in 1979, where they continued to attack the few remaining indigenous communities.

With the last Khmer Rouge militants abandoning their struggle in 1994, peace returned in the mid-1990s. Many, nevertheless, continued to live in the isolated bush for a few years. As soon as the peace was restored, widespread logging and poaching began, two problems that still pose a threat to the forest's survival today.
