Abderrahman Slaoui Museum

Abderrahman Slaoui Museum

The Abderrahman Slaoui Museum is a privately owned museum located at 12 Rue Du Parc in Casablanca. Spread across 3 floors, it displays the collection of the businessman and art collector Abderrahman Slaoui, including old posters, paintings, and 18th and 19th-century Moroccan. The Orientalist posters are popular and mainly about travel and tourism. The museum hosts the work of contemporary artists quarterly and many art workshops, including one on calligraphy in the Maghrebi script. In addition, there is a literary cafe on the terrace and a gift shop. Although the exhibition signs are in French and Arabic, a printed guide in English is available upon request. You may also undertake guided tours to understand the art exhibition better. It is located near Mohammed V Square and is only a few minutes' walk away from the tramway station of the same name. The Arab League Park is the city’s central park, often known as the “oasis of Casablanca”. It is located west of Hassan II Boulevard. Renowned for its lush greenery owing to its diverse vegetation, especially its tall palm trees, it is an excellent place for walking, jogging, reading, meditating or taking photographs. The best time to visit is early morning or around sunset when the views are exquisite. There is also a pond within the park that features beautiful water lilies and various exotic plants. Azemmour is a city to the Southwest of Casablanca known for its spring festival, historic lighthouse Sidi Boubeker and beautiful coastline. The town has a Portuguese medina which is the oldest medina in Morocco. Azemmour is also replete with quaint cafes and restaurants that serve delicious food. Azemmour also features Maison d'Artisanat, an old Koranic school converted into a centre of art and culture. It is famous for its art exhibitions, displays of local handicrafts and classrooms where different indigenous art forms are taught. The rooftop offers a most stunning view of the entire city and the Oum er Rbia River that runs alongside it. You can enjoy boat rides on this river. The Haouzia Beach offers activities like windsurfing and swimming and has many facilities like rentable beach chairs, parasols, lavatories, showers and car parking. There is a popular 7.6 km loop trail that can be covered in around 2 hours. It is the ideal location to enjoy nature before setting out on a city tour. Morocco's second modern tram system, the Casa Tramway, operates in Casablanca and is a low-floor tram system. It consists of two lines, one (T1) that runs between Sidi Moumen to Lissasfa and another (T2) between Sidi Bernoussi to Aïn Diab. Clean and well-maintained, several tramway stops are close to famous attractions, including the Église de Notre Dame de Lourdes, Sacred Heart Cathedral, Carrefour Hypermarket, and the beach at Ain Dian and United Nations Square. The system comprises 71 stops and will soon have two more lines.  T1 connects to two train stations, Voyageurs and L’Oasis. Given that it is an open-air tramway, one must walk along the road to transfer between lines. Mahkama du Pacha or Mahkamat al-Pasha is a mid-20th-century administrative building located in the Hubous neighbourhood of Casablanca. Constructed during the Second World War, it is famous for its classic Moorish architecture. There is beautiful furniture inside as well. The building is currently used for state affairs, so entry is rarely allowed inside. It is still worth stopping by to admire the facade. Mahkama du Pacha translates to “the pasha’s courthouse” and used to house a courtyard, jail, parliamentary reception hall, and the pasha’s residence. It features zeleej or mosaic tilework, carved cedar wood ceilings, chiselled stucco work, white marble columns, geometric designs, arches, arabesque plaster and green tiled roofs.  Read More

Another highlight is the musical fountain, played every 20 minutes with Arab and international music. Museum of Moroccan Judaism

Museum of Moroccan Judaism

Situated within Casablanca’s Oasis Quartier, the Museum of Moroccan Judaism is the only museum in the Arabic-speaking world that is dedicated to Judaism. The exhibits focus on a 2000-year-long history of Jews in Morocco, especially in Casablanca. Some exhibits include the bimah from the Beni-Issakhar Synagogue, a Hanukkah menorah, the preamble of the country’s 2011 Constitution and more. The Museum of Moroccan Judaism was built at the end of the 20th century and is divided into three exhibition rooms that house documents, jewellery, costumes, ritual objects, tools, etc. There is also a multi-purpose room which consists of photographs, sculptures and paintings depicting Jewish life in the country. In addition, there is a reconstructed jewellery-making workshop here that was made using the workbench and tools of Saul Cohen, a Jewish silversmith. The Notre Dame de Lourdes Church is a Roman Catholic Church in Casablanca famous for its modernist European architecture. Built in the mid-20th century, it is best known for its beautiful stained glass windows made by the French artist Gabriel Loire. Owing to these windows, the inside of the church is filled with colourful rays of sunshine. The church, a sharp contrast to the traditional ones in the area, has a long concrete hood or entryway which features a Cross at the top. There is a small shrine inside where one can light a candle.
