City Bird Wildlife Sanctuary

The City Bird Wildlife Sanctuary is located in sector 21 of Chandigarh. It is also popularly known as Parrot Bird Sanctuary due to the presence of hundreds of different types of parrots. The total area of the sanctuary covers around 2.9 hectares with several trees that bring you close to nature. City Bird Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1998. It is the second sanctuary after the Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary of Chandigarh. Along with the parrots you will also find around 262 varieties of birds such as peacocks, Hoopoes, Hornbills, Woodpeckers, etc. Apart from that, you will find various butterflies, reptiles such as Common Krait, Indian Python, etc. You will also find leopards, Hanuman Langur, and Mongoose in the sanctuary.  Several benches are beautifully designed for the visitors to sit and enjoy the serenity of the park. Not only this, but the sanctuary is also the first bird sanctuary for birds which is located in the middle of the city. However, in the past few years, there has been a decline in the population of parrots. Previously, the population was around 10, 000 which has been drastically reduced to 2000. In the past, parrots used to sleep and wake up according to “Photoperiodism.” It means that they wake up according to the lights which were installed by the Municipal Corporation.After the complaint of a bird lover, it was noted that the artificial lights largely affect the sleep pattern of birds. The Fateh Burj is located in Mohali, Punjab. Fateh Burj means Victory Tower and also the tallest tower in India. It was built in 2011 situated in Baba Banda Bahadur War Memorial in a 20 acres plot. It has a historical significance with the battle of Chappar Chiri between Baba Banda Bahadur Singh against Mughal emperor Wazir Khan. While entering the war memorial, you will find the Fateh Burj which has a height of 328 feet. The openings and windows of the tower are made in a triangular shape that symbolizes the opening that was previously used by the army to place cannons and guns. Its structure has an octagonal shape divided into three sections that can easily withstand the high pressure of the wind. During the evening, the minar looks magnificent with soothing and classy lighting. Along with that, the minar is surrounded by an artificial pond and green landscape. The design of the war memorial is a small replica of Chappar Chiri with small artificial hilltops. Statues of Baba Banda Bahadur Singh and other warriors are placed on every hilltop. Beneath those statues, they have halls and rooms that contain a museum to provide information about the past. On the top of the minar, you will observe a dome is kept which signifies the Sikh culture. The whole setup of the war memorial will transport you to history. Situated just a kilometer northeast of Sukhna Lake in the foothills of Shivalik, Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary was formed in 1998. One of the most popular wildlife sanctuaries in Chandigarh, Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary is spread across 2600 hectares and has over 150 small and large water bodies around the Sukhna lake, forming their catchment areas. Situated just a kilometer northeast of Sukhna Lake in the foothills of Shivalik, Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary was formed in 1998. One of the most popular wildlife sanctuaries in Chandigarh, Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary is spread across 2600 hectares and has over 150 small and large water bodies around the Sukhna lake, forming their catchment areas. Visitors can enjoy uninterrupted wildlife, watching peaceful glimpses of peacocks, cuckoo, spotted deer, pangolin, jungle cat, wild boar, sambar, and many others. Bird lovers can enjoy more than 1750 varieties of birds flying around, including kingfisher, hoopoes, red jungle fowl, grey partridge, and dozens of varieties of reptiles, including cobra, Russell's viper, and Indian python. Varieties of fauna include neem, kikar, dhaak, shisham, semal, moonj, vasak and dozens more. The sanctuary previously faced major issues of siltation by the Sukhna river, but now the adequate forest cover of the area has reduced it. It has two entry points via the Kansal gate and the Nepli gate. Travelers can embark on their journey inside the sanctuary via Kaimbwala village from the Kansal gate or Suketri village through Nepli gate. Tank Monument

The Tank Monument in Chandigarh is located near Leisure Valley, quite close to the Government Museum and Art Gallery. A Patton tank (M46), it is a tribute to the Indian Army and stands as a testament to their wars with Pakistan, especially of the Indo-Pakistan War of 1965. The 1965 War between India and Pakistan saw the latter fighting with superior quality equipment including tanks. This particular Patton tank was captured during the Battle of Asal Uttar as it is said that the Pakistani troops would abandon a tank once it was hit fearing that it would go up in flames.
