Holy Monastery of Panagia Vlacherna

Holy Monastery of Panagia Vlacherna

The Vlacherna Monastery is a 17th-century Christian monastery located on a small islet in the Kanoni district of South Corfu. The monastery was functioning until 1980 but is now only used for certain celebrations and is open to the public. The islet of the monastery is connected via a wooden pedestrian walkway to the mainland. The monastery has fishing and ferry boats running to Pontikonisi Island (Mouse Island). The Monastery is popular in mainstream culture as it featured in the 1981 James Bond movie (For Your Eyes Only). The monastery offers a great view of the landing planes in the airport. Through binoculars, tourists can look closer at the island, the sea, and the nearby beaches of Kontogialos and Glyfada. What adds to this magnificent Observatory is a more than 100 years old iron door with railings that leads to a lush garden.
