Delft City Hall

Delft City Hall

The former seat of the government in Delft, the Delft City Hall, is a striking structure and a significant landmark of the city. The Delft City Hall is a superb Renaissance building located just across Nieuwe Kerk. It is a beautiful Renaissance-style building with Belgian limestone-covered tower. Built on the location of the former town hall in 1620 (the initial building was burnt 2 years earlier, and was constructed in the 13th century). The columns and arches throughout the building are some examples of the pronounced Rennaisance style, as well as the intricate detailing that can be seen throughout. The tower, which is the oldest part of the building, is covered with elaborate Belgian limestone. Inside, there are some interesting pieces of artwork as well. The City Hall isn't used for government working anymore, but it is still used quite often for political events, as well as weddings. The balcony on the facade makes for some refreshing views of the city. Read More

Prinsenhof Museum

Prinsenhof Museum

A museum displaying the history of the Netherlands around the time of William of Orange, and also home to a brilliant collection of Dutch Golden Age paintings. The Prinsenhof is actually the place where William of Orange was murdered in 1584. It is located on Sint Agathaplein. It is a historic urban palace, built during the middle ages. At the main stairs, where the assassination took place, the bullet holes can still be seen. William of Orange was a ruler well ahead of his time, and his liberal ideas were not digested well, leading to his assassination by the Spanish. The museum is set up just like it would've been back in the day, with exquisite pieces of Delftware all over. There are also collections of fabulous paintings by artists like Hugo de Groot and Johannes Vermeer, and many others from the Golden Age of the Dutch. A very educational and captivating tour of Dutch history, the museum is a popular tourist attraction. Read More

Nieuwe Church

Nieuwe Church

Nieuwe Church is one of the most famous landmarks of Delft. Its historical importance aside, the church is a truly marvelous work of architecture. Its gothic style is pronounced, and the tower forms an integral part of the cityscape offering mesmerizing views as far as Rotterdam. Literally translating to 'New Church', the church is anything but new. This 600 year old church hosts the tomb of nearly every member of the royal family of Orange-Nassau since William the Silent in 1584, in the famous mausoleum designed by Hendrick and Pieter de Keyser. There are two sections of the crypt, the newer one was used for the first time in 1822, and the older one is under the tomb of WIlliam the Silent. The Royal Vault is not open to the public, and is only accessible to members of the royal family.  Read More

Eastern Gate

Eastern Gate

Capturing the city's rich heritage, the Eastern Gate was built in the 15th century and is the only surviving gate tower of the city. It is a beautiful Brick Gothic northern European architecture. Strolling along the outside of the gate in itself will offer you some scenic views of the canal. Oostpoort for long served as the identity of the city of Delft. Artists through centuries have used the iconic towers of the East Gate in many of their works, as they were thought to be the perfect representation of the grandeur of the city. Though the upper floors of the building are now a private residence, the ground floor displays a varying collection of arts.  Read More

Old Church

Old Church

Another iconic church of Delft, the Gothic Old Church, is nearly 800 years old and a piece of architectural beauty. Apart from its pulpit and a collection of stained glass windows, it is known for its tilted tower, three massive pipe organs, and the enormous church bell weighing 9 tonnes. The 75 metre tall tower of the Oude Kerk is something you will not miss, not in a million years. But what's even more intriguing about it is the fact that the tower leans by a little under 2 metres. The reason for this is believed to be the nearby canal that was shifted to make the room for the tower, making for a weak foundation. In fact, the tower began to lean during the construction itself, and efforts were put in to make it upright as the layers were added. Details and features were added to the church as the centuries went by. While the building itself was completed in 1240, the beautiful sculped pulpit was added in 1548, and the collection of stained glass windows is enchanting. The church is home to the tomb of famous Delft painter, Johannes Vermeer, and also naval admirals Piet Hein and Maarten Tromp. Read More

Vermeer Centrum

Vermeer Centrum

Located at the city center, Vermeer Centrum is a museum dedicated to the life and works of Johannes Vermeer, one of the best-known painters of the Dutch Golden Age. The center also has a gift shop and a restaurant where you can sit for a delicious breakfast round. Though the centre doesn't display any of the original works of Johannes Vermeer (since they have found places in one of the biggest museums all over the world), it displays a collection of 36 life size replicas of Vermeer's most mesmerising works. The centre has in depth stories behind each of his paintings and his life. The exhibitions also include a vibrant showcase of 17th century Delft, the extremely artistic atmosphere of the city which saw great contributions made to the Dutch Golden Age. The studio is a fascinating place, revealing how Vermeer used the colours and lighting to make his artworks so marvellous.  Read More
