Kenneth Stainbank Nature Reserve is one of Durban's most delicate coastal forest areas, located on Coedmore Avenue next to Yellowwood Park. It is home to Yellowwood trees, nature walk trails and a 10 km mountain bike trail. The Nature Reserve is also famous for night drives and bird watching. Kenneth Stainbank Nature Reserve houses wildlife, including zebras, bushbucks, dassies, Egyptian, slender or banded mongeese, blue, red and grey duikers, bushbabies, and genets, impalas, reedbucks, vervet monkeys, water monitors, and rock hyraxes. In addition, it is home to a diverse population of birds, including grey cuckoo shrike, tambourine dove and the white-eared barbet. Waterbirds such as the red-chested flufftail can be viewed near the dam area, whereas birds like Narina trogon, olive woodpecker, lemon dove and yellow-bellied greenbul can be seen near the wooded parts of the Reserve. Hidden within the Reserve is the Coedmore Castle, built-in 1885. It contains furniture from the nineteenth century, old family portraits and antique silverware. Paradise Valley Nature Reserve is over 100 hectares of coastal grassland in Pinetown. It is known for the beautiful Umbilo river and hiking trails. Four well-marked nature trails start at the Interpretive Centre and lead through the picnic area. There is an old wooden bridge that can be used to cross the picnic area with the remnants of an old dam wall. Located nearby are some stone steps leading to a clear pool at the bottom of a gorgeous waterfall. Follow the yellow trail markers to take the Duiker path and visit the historical Umbilo Waterworks, which were built in 1887. Wildlife can be spotted at the Nature Valley, including dassies, bushbucks, water mongoose, slender mongoose, otter, and blue duikers.
