A foundation laid by Vasco Da Gama in the late 15th century exists inside the garden. It now bears the Ashoka Pillar marking the 400th anniversary of the first sea voyage from Europe to India.

The exquisite Museum was founded in 1994 with the help of the Archdiocese of Goa and was financed jointly by the Portuguese Association and Indian National Trust of Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH).
