And these dealers used to travel in large vessels and boats, which were called Sampans, and the harborage or harborage they had situated was called thota. And because of this, the city was called Sampantota, also known as Godawaya. As time passed, this area was called Hambantota.

This city was a part of the traditional south, called Ruhana. Back in the day, Hambantota and the neighbouring regions were the mecca of a thriving society as well as the Sri Lankan Buddhist culture. And near Hambantota, there's a massive tabernacle known as Tissamaharama, which was constructed to house a sacred tooth relic.
