The Great Banyan Tree

The Great Banyan tree, about 250 years old is located in Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Botanical Garden in Howrah. It is quite popular because of the gigantic size it has grown into in the past years, expanding to about 4.67 acres of land. The tree continues to grow beyond the 330-metre long road that was built around it circumference. It has been mentioned in many travel books since the 19th century. More than an individual tree, it appears more like a dense forest. The highest branch rises to 24.5 metres, and the crown of the tree has a circumference of  486 metres. There are 3772 aerial roots that connect to the ground and the height of the majestic tree is almost equivalent to that of the Gateway of India. Vidyasagar Setu is the longest cable-stayed bridge in India built over the Hooghly River in West Bengal. It is also popularly known as the Second Hooghly Bridge, as it was the second bridge to be built across this river. It was named after Pandit Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar who was an educationist reformer and a key contributor to the Bengal Renaissance. The bridge carries the Kona Expressway (or NH 117) and connects Howrah to Kolkata. Vidyasagar Setu was built to decrease the congestion on Howrah Bridge that is located about 8 kilometres away. The Writers’ Building, located in the capital city of Kolkata, is a secretariat building of State Government of West Bengal. It is one of the many heritage buildings situated in Kolkata that brings out the essence of the British East India Company era. Stretched across Lal Dighi, a local water body in the B.B.D Bagh area of Kolkata, it has served as the office of Chief Minister of West Bengal up until 2013. The Secretariat of West Bengal Government has shifted out of Writer’s Building to a new office known as Nabanna for temporary basis as Writers’ Building is under renovation currently.
