Cafe Batavia is a 19th-century old restaurant situated in Kota Tua (also known as Old Town) in Jakarta, Indonesia. This 200-year-old building is known to be the second most former building of Jakarta after the Fatahillah Museum. Very few buildings from the 19th century can be found in Jakarta, and this restaurant is one among them. Candra Naya Building

Candra Naya Building

Candra Naya is an 18th-century building that belonged to the Khouw family of Tamboen, Chinese immigrants who later played an important role in the society of Batavia. It is located in Jakarta's Kota Dua, or 'Old Town'. Nestled inside a modern hotel, many parts of the complex have been destroyed but the main complex has been retained due to its importance to Indonesian heritage. The building displays aesthetically pleasing Chinese features like curved roofs and red lanterns. The building used to serve as the residence for the Khouw family, an important and wealthy family of landowners that were firmly a part of the Batavian fabric of society. Initially, there were three palatial buildings built as houses for the family but only Candra Naya remains as it used to be and has been turned into a heritage site. The other two buildings have been turned into the embassy for the People's Republic of China, and another into a state school. Candra Naya was nearly razed to the ground after new owners bought the house, but fierce protesting regarding its status as a heritage icon prevailed and it was allowed to remain standing.  Read More
