Kampong Cham Tourism
Welcome to the enchanting realm of Kampong Cham, a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Cambodia. Our journey begins with the pulsating rhythm of this picturesque town, offering a unique blend of rich history, vibrant culture, and breathtaking landscapes. Kampong Cham Tourism promises an immersive experience, unveiling the secrets of this captivating destination.
Kampong Cham is the capital of a fiefdom of the same name, located on the banks of the Mekong River in southeastern Cambodia. It's the third-largest megacity of the country, known for many Angkorian tabernacles and beautiful country life on the strands in townlets.
Due to its lesser-known status compared to other river towns like Kampot or Kep, it is one of the least frequented travel destinations. It is advised that travellers go to Kampong Cham to take advantage of the peaceful moments by the river, where they may go bicycling, boating, and touring historic temples.
Kampong Cham City (also known as Klong Kampong Cham) is the largest population centre in Kampong Cham province. Phnom Penh is about three hours north on one of the country's relatively well-maintained roads. Kampong Cham is the gateway to Cambodia's north and far east, making it a perfect one- or two-day stopover between the capital and Kratie (or Don Det and the Lao border), Ratanakiri, or Mondulkiri.
Like much of Cambodia, Kampong Cham province is prone to flooding during the rainy season. The weather is becoming unstable, and it is difficult to predict when it will rain, but I generally avoid visiting during the peak of the rainy season (August and September). In recent years, heavy rains have completely washed away the city's main streets and riverside promenades into the Mekong River.
December, January, and February are the driest months. March and April are the hottest months and should be avoided at all costs unless you like 40-degree Celsius temperatures and having your face covered in dust when you step outside.
My last visit was in September, historically the peak of the monsoon season. But all I had to do was battle the afternoon storm. The advantages of travelling to Cambodia during the rainy season often outweigh the disadvantages. Everything is fresh and green; there are Buddhist festivals; temperatures are cooler; and there is generally more life.
In summary, my favourite times to visit Kampong Cham and Cambodia in general are May to July and late September to November. Two full days is the best time to stay in Kampong Cham. You have 48 hours to explore the city on your own or explore the surrounding countryside by bike or motorbike.I spent four full days in Kampong Cham on my last visit and was never bored. I love the relaxing atmosphere of going to the market every morning and watching the sun set over the river at dusk. I also love being the only tourist in town, which happens sometimes. It's the perfect place to hit the pause button and relax for a few days.
