The present Kedarnath Temple is believed to have been reconstructed by Adi Shankaracharya, originally erected by the Pandavas a thousand times ago from enormous gravestone crossbeams over a large blockish tribune. The Kedarnath tabernacle, devoted to Lord Shiva, is a part of the Char Dham passage circuit and is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva in India. Behind the Kedarnath tabernacle stand the Kedarnath peak, Kedar Dome, and other Himalayan peaks. The literal name of this region is" Kedar Khand," and legend says that the Pandavas from the grand Mahabharata, after having defeated the Kauravas, felt shamed for having killed so many people and sought the blessings of Lord Shiva for redemption. The Lord escaped them constantly and took refuge at Kedarnath in the form of a bull. The Lord dived into the ground, leaving his hump on the face of Kedarnath. The remaining portions of Lord Shiva appeared at four other places and are worshipped there as his instantiations. The arms of the Lord appeared at Tungnath, the face at Rudranath, the belly at Madmaheshwar, and his cinches( hair) at Kalpeshwar. The Kedarnath and the four above-mentioned sanctuaries make the deified Panch Kedar passage circuit.
