It surprised me to learn that the 165-square-kilometer Cheow Lan Lake, which sits in the centre of the public domain, is actually man-made! In 1982, the Thai government made the decision to make the lake a source of hydroelectric power. They did this by erecting a levee, cutting off the Pasaeng swash, and allowing the area, which is now the lake, to be swamped. In doing this, five townlets that sat in the vale were vacated, and the structures still remain at the bottom of the lake! Khao Sok is impeccably positioned on the landmass between Phuket, Krabi, Khao Lak, and Koh Samui, the most popular destinations in southern Thailand. It's a fantastic place to go on vacation.
