Trash Hero
Koh Lipe had been suffering from increased unchecked garbage problems for many years as tourism increased. In December 2013, a Thai-Swiss organization, Trash Hero, started organizing clean-ups in not only Koh Lipe but also in polluted areas in and around Koh Tarutao Marine National Park. Their main aim is to protect the island's beaches without using expensive machines and volunteers. One can volunteer at this non-profit organization to help clean the trash from the island.
The organisation conducts regular volunteer cleanups every Monday. Local businesses have supported them thoroughly by supplying long-tailed boats, food, drinks and garbage bags. Over the years, around 1,000 volunteers have successfully removed 21,000kg of rubbish from the local beaches.
