Catherine Falls

Catherine Falls in Kotagiri near Ooty is nestled amidst the lush greens of the Nilgiris. The water of the Kallar River, cut off by the Mettupalayam - Ooty road beyond the mountains, falls in a double cascade from over a height of 250 meters as it forms the Catherine Falls, making it the second-highest waterfall of the Nilgiris. Located near Kotagiri, this tourist-favorite spot is often visited by people travelling the Ooty-Coonoor. The entire area around the Catherine waterfalls is covered with beautiful greenery of the forest of Nilgiris, tea plantations, and the plains of Mettupalayam. A climb to the top of Dolphin's Nose, a spectacular viewpoint at 1000 feet above sea level, reveals the most picturesque view of the Catherine waterfalls and the whole stretch of greenery around it. The tip of this unique rock formation resembles the snout of a dolphin, from which it gets its quirky name.Catherine Falls has some fantastic trek routes as well. Apart from the 2-3 kilometers walk from the road to the falls through the pine forests, travelers interested in exploring a bit more can start walking from the small town of Aravenu as well. The place also acts as a Nilgiris Museum as well as Nilgiris Documentation center (NDC). A stone house i.e. the Governments Art College situated in the vicinity can also be visited which was once a residence of Sullivan in his later years.
