The Acropolis of Lindos is an ancient citadel of ruins situated on a 116-metre cliff overlooking the Aegean sea. Offering a picturesque view from the hilltop, the Lindos Acropolis consists of a beautiful Hellenistic period gallery, a St. John Byzantine Church and Knights’ headquarters that are worth admiring. It is accessible only on foot or donkeys. A colourful Doric temple from the 4th century dedicated to Athena Lindia and a five-door Roman temple with a Hellenistic wall is the highlight of the Acropolis. The silhouette stone pillars and breathtaking bay views make it worth a visit. Other important sites you can visit are the theatre, Boukopion, the four-portico building, and a few cemeteries and churches of important personalities of Ancient Greece. The myth suggests that the cult of Athena Lindia dates back to the pre-Hellenic era. But the foundation of the civilization in Lindos is from the Geometric period. The predecessor of the present-day temple of Athena Lindia was only formed in the archaic period by the tyrants of Lindos and Kleobolus. It was burnt down and replaced by a new temple with the Propulaea and a significant staircase. Lindos had a strong naval power up until the 19th century. Read More
