Holy House of Mercy

Holy House of Mercy

The Holy House of Mercy was built by the first Bishop of Macau and is located in Senado Square. The exterior is painted a tranquil white, and this makes it the simplest yet the most elegant looking building of all the monuments in the square. The museum on the second floor is the main attraction for visitors. It contains items of donated sacrificial offerings including a portrait of Sacred Heart of Jesus, ivory sculpture of Madonna, a statue of Jesus on the Cross and some porcelain. A manual script written in 1662 citing the Regulations of Macau's Holy House of Mercy is the most valuable religious relic which is housed there. The skull of its founder and a funerary cross are also items of importance and value in the museum. The building earlier served as a first western-style medical clinic and then as other social welfare structures and continues to do so. The orphanage and old ladies home are functional to date. Currently, the idol in the I Leng Temple is the Emperor of Sacred Doctor. It is a site of historical significance due to the various important relics encased there such as vertical couplets, imperial style lanterns, horizontal plaque and shrines. The name ‘I Leng’ can refer to any venerated physicians or pharmacists such as Shennong, Hua Tuo, and Sun Simiao. The Kuan Iam Statue, located on the seashores of Macau and Taipa regions along Avenida Dr Sun Yat – Sen in Macau, is a 32 metres tall bronze statue of Guanyin on a 16 petal lotus seat. Kuan Iam Statue is an example of the religious and historical beliefs of people of Macau, standing tall since 1997. It is around 50 tons heavy and shines brightly during the sunny days due to the golden and bronze shade. The scale and sitting of Kuan Iam Statue on the lotus seat are highly appreciated along with the base which displays the process of building it. Along with the Ecumenical Centre and gift shop, the location on the seashore provides a peaceful aura to the place. It is worth visiting if you are near the waterfront area. The Leal Senado Building which is now the Legislative Assembly and Municipal Court of Macau is located at the end of Senado Square in San Laurenco. The name Leal Senado translates to 'Loyal Senate'. At the entrance of the building, one can see the plaque ordained by the then king of Portugal, John VI. It also exhibits a Chinese style pavilion. This building is a reminder of the Portuguese rule over Macau, which was on the locals for their loyalty. A bust of the Portuguese poet, Luis Vaz de Camoes can also be seen at the Portuguese style courtyard in the back. The exhibition hall hosts various kinds of art exhibitions from time to time, while the public room is used for meetings. The public library houses about 18,500 books, specializing in foreign languages. Some other institutions including a post office, a court and a prison are affiliated to the building. This historical mansion was home to a Chinese merchant, Lou Kau. Located in Travessa da Sé, this mansion is described as having "great architectural, artistic value". The house, constructed in classic Xiguan style showcases an amalgamation of the Portuguese and Chinese architecture. It is also used as a venue for small concerts by The Macau Chinese Orchestra. The 2- storey building features three courtyards. The Entrance Hall, Tea Hall and Senior Hall are all separated by screens, exhibiting the hierarchical structure of the Chinese. The flower and bird motif on the roof is similar to the ones in the Mandarin House and A-ma Temple. The Lou Lim Ieoc Garden, another historical spot was also built as part of the residence.
