Asia's largest Dry Fish Market

The largest dry fish market of Asia is situated at Jagiroad in Marigaon District. One can find there the variety of freshwater and sea fish that were mainly brought to the place from states like Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Bihar. The fish from this market is then further supplied to the states of Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh. Located at Deosal Village near Pabitora Wildlife Sanctuary, this temple as the name suggests is dedicated to Lord Shiva. If you are visiting the place during the festival of Shivratri, you can take part in the festival that takes place at the site during the occasion. Also, it is a popular belief that this very village was the ashram of Maharishi Valmiki and the site where Goddess Site abode after Lord Ram abandoned her.

Joon Beel Mela is a traditional fair where the people of hills go to the plains and exchange the goods made by them with the goods made by the people of plains. Symbolizing the understanding between among the hills and plain, the mela takes place every year during Magh. However, how and when this tradition started is not known but it was given an organized form by the king of Gova.

Another ancient and popular temple of the town at the top of Kachsila Hill is located a few kilometers from Pobitora. Dating back to 9th century, the temple houses many idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. One can also witness many admiring idols of Lord Ganesha in the temple complex. Sitajakhala

Sitajakhala is a famous ancient temple discovered during the last year of the fourth decade of last century. Nestled on the banks of River Killing, the temple is adorned with many idols of Goddess Sita and Lord Hanuman. As per the popular myth, Valmiki built the stone steps for Goddess Sita, going up to River Killing for her convenience. Hence, the steps were named Sita Jakhala.
