Rabai Museum
The Rabai Museum is located inside Kenya’s first Christian church, the Rabai Church, situated northwest of Mombasa in Rabai. It displays exhibits about the history of Christianity, archives on the Slave Trade, and artefacts related to the Mijikenda peoples, such as traditional clothing, tools used to prepare food and regalia.
The Rabai Museum primarily focuses on the work of German missionary Johann Ludwig Krapf (who built the church) and the contribution of other missionaries over the past 150 years. One would also find the first translation of the Christian Bible in Swahili and different local dialects here, along with beautiful pottery done by the locals. The church was also used as a rescue centre for slaves. Outside the church is one of the first classrooms built in the country to disseminate Christianity.

Shelly Beach
Shelly Beach is the second largest public beach in the coastal hub close to Mombasa. The white sandy beach has tall palm trees and calm waters. It is not recommended to go in the water because often there are sea urchins and other aquatic animals that reside here. The beach and the surrounding hotels are good for visiting for a quick one-day excursion.
Shimba Hills National Reserve
The Shimba Hills National Reserve is located about 33km from Mombasa in what was earlier the Coast Province of Kenya. It is one of the largest coastal rainforests in East Africa and the only area in Kenya where the Sable Antelopes are found. The Sheldrick Falls are also located within the reserve.
One can explore the forest on game drives, and safari vehicles (4*4), by hiking, walking, and visiting the viewing points. Some of the viewing points are the Elephant Hill, Marere Dam (watering hole), and more. The National Park is home to 50% of the rare plants found in Kenya, including endangered species, such as orchids and cycad. Yet, its biggest attractions are the elephants! Wildlife at Shimba Hills National Reserve includes buffaloes, giraffes, butterflies, baboons, monkeys, and many different bird species. Due to the thick forest cover spotting animals may not be as easy as in many other African reserves. However, this makes the guided tours and game drives even more exciting. Besides the wildlife and plants, the Sheldrick Falls within the reserve are a stunning sight. A guided tour or hike is highly recommended for visiting Sheldrick Falls. With several trails, viewing points and rolling hills that are relatively easier to hike, the Shimba Hills National Park is ideal for adults and children.
