Mahalaxmi temple, Mumbai

The Mahalaxmi Temple is one of the oldest temples situated in the city of Mumbai. Located on the Bhulabai Desai Road in Mahalaxmi West, it is dedicated to Goddess Mahalaxmi or the 'Goddess of Wealth'. The temple was built sometime around the 16th - 17th century and the main presiding deity here is Goddess Laxmi, while Goddess Kali and Saraswati are other two deities worshipped here. Together, the three idols are known as Mahalaxmi, Mahakali and Mahasaraswati. Thronged with devotees and tourists in large number throughout the year, the temple is a must visit if you are visiting Mumbai. The edifice of the Mahalaxmi Temple is simple and charming in its appearance, which is an apt reflection of the very serene and calm atmosphere that prevails inside. The idols of the Goddesses here are adorned with gold bangles, pearl necklaces and nose rings, with Mahalaxmi occupying the central position. You will find several shops to buy the necessary items required for the puja and these stalls serve as a great help for those visiting the temple for the first time. Situated opposite the bus stop in Dharavi, Mumbai, Maharashtra Nature Park is one of the most green spaces in the city. The park is the wonderful reformation of a dumping ground in 1994. The gorgeous park now boasts of more than 12000 trees in the premises.

Mahipatagad is a hill fort in the state of Maharashtra. Mahipatagad is a twin fort of Rasalgad, located in the Ratnagiri district. The fort is famous for its six entrance door or 'Darwazas' but most of them have crumbled down. There is Shiva temple at the top by the name of Mayureshwar Mahadev, and two small ponds facing the temple. Huge heaps of lime and mortar are found at some places atop the fort. The top of the fort is occupied by dense forests for most of the part. There are tanks of water at the top as well. Mahuli is a hill fort in Maharashtra. Located in the district of Thane, the peak of the fort rises to an elevation of 2700 feet from the ground. The summit is actually a collection of 2-3 hills, all having typical names. Much of the fortifications are still present, and the crumbling remains of an old guesthouse can be seen, devoid of its arch though. There are cisterns of water at the top, and a number of water tanks on the way to the fort. There is a small Shiva temple atop the citadel, and a group of caves to the left of the temple. Makarandgad (or Madhumakarandgad) is a hill fort in the state of Maharashtra. Believed to be comprised of twin peaks, Madhu and Makarandgad, the fort has thus derived its name. Situated n the district of Satara, the fort rises to an elevation of 4000 feet from the ground There are freshwater cisterns and tanks of water in the fort. The top of the fort is more of a plateau than a hill, and has a Mallikarjun Mahadev temple. The way to the fort has a huge Gamdevi temple. The fortifications sre all gone, and not much remains to be seen. The dense orests of Javli surround the fort from all sides. The beautiful backwaters of Koyna and Shivsagar dams can be seen easily from the top, along with the peaks of Pratapgad and Mahabaleshwar. Read More

Situated near Borivali West in Mumbai, Mandapeshwar Caves are 8th Century rock-cut shrine which are dedicated to the Hindu God - Shiva. Initially the caves were Buddhist Viharas, some time later they were occupied by the Brahmans. Currently they are a popular tourist site.

Marine Drive, Mumbai

Marine Drive is the most easily identifiable landmark associated with Mumbai and is indicative of the glamor and glitter of the city. It is essentially 3.6 km long, arc-shaped boulevard along the South Mumbai coast that starts at the southern end of Nariman Point and ends at Girgaum Chowpatty, popularly known as Chowpatty Beach. The coast wraps the Arabian sea and is the best place in Mumbai to watch the sunset or even to just take a leisurely stroll by the sea any time of the day or night. At night, when the whole coastline lights up, it justifies its other moniker i.e. Queen's Necklace. The whole curve of the coastline, shielded with palm trees makes for a spectacular view at night - you can go to either end of Marine Drive after sunset and see the lights glowing in a perfect arc all along the coast. Formerly known as Ranichi Bagh meaning Queen's Gardens, Jijamata Udyan is the only zoo in the city of Mumbai. Its former name is a depiction of the original British name Victoria Gardens. Now it is also known as Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan and Zoo, named after the mother of Shivaji, the hero of Maratha Empire. The zoo is located in the heart of the city in Byculla. Built in 1861, it is the only zoo of Mumbai and one of the oldest in India. In the zoo, you can witness many wild animals in separate enclosures such as lion, monkeys, crocodiles, elephants and many more. The aviary has a good collection of bright and noisy birds. The zoo is going through a revamping procedure which will add many exciting features to the premise as well as bring in many more species of animals.
