Namakkal Anjaneyar Temple

Namakkal Anjaneyar Temple

Namakkal, a town in the district of the same name, in Tamil Nadu has come to be famous because of an ancient Anjaneyar(Hanuman)temple here. It is also popularly known as the Dakshina Srisailam. The temple shelters a humongous idol of Lord Hanuman in a standing posture, with His hands, clasped together as if to worship someone or something. This pose is called Vishwaroopa Darshan. The 18 feet idol is one of the tallest such in the country. The sculpture is a monolith, being carved out from a single slab of stone. The temple is believed to have been built in the 5th century AD. Interesting to note here is that there is no roof over the sanctum sanctorum. Source People believe that the idol keeps growing and that many of the Pallavas, who built spacious rooms, pillars around the temple, had tried in vain to construct a roof over Anjaneyar Swamy. Every year, a 15-day Panguni Uthiram festival is organised during the month of March-April, when the processional deities are taken out in streets. Read More

Namakkal Fort

Namakkal Fort or Rock Fort, located atop a hillock that’s made of a single rock, is another famous attraction in the Namakkal district of Tamil Nadu. Built during the reign of Thirumalai Nayak, in the 17th century, the fort stands a historical symbol today. The fort is spread over an area of one-and-a-half acres. There are two religious sites located within the fort: one is a mosque and another is Narasimha Swamy Temple. The fort is reportedly built by Ramachandra Nayakar, the poligar(governor) of  Thirumalai Nayak, who was the most-remarkable and charismatic king of the 13 Nayaks that ruled Madurai.  Source The hillock which forms the base for the fort is called Namagiri. The fort sits at a height of 75 metre, offering splendid views of the entire town. The fort was captured by the British from the Mysore king of Hyder Ali. He reconquered it, but had to lose again to the British in 1792. There are eight water tanks in and around the fort, of which Kamalalayam tank, the famous among them, is located at the centre of the Namakkal town. Read More

Namakkal Narasimha Swamy Temple

Namakkal Narasimha Swamy Temple

Arulmigu Narasimha Swamy Temple, located in the district of Namakkal of Tamil Nadu, sees tourists coming from all over the state. Scholars believe that the temple was built around the 8th century by the Pandya kings. This is the temple facing which Lord Hanuman stands in a worshipping posture. The temple of Arulmigu Narasimha Swamy is built in the Dravidian style of architecture. The temple is carved out of the hill and is located at the foothills of the Namakkal Fort. The fort itself is another crowd-puller in the town. Every year, a 15-day Panguni Uthiram festival is organised during the month of March-April, when the processional deities are taken out in streets. A spacious pathway of pillared halls leads to the main sanctum where the Lord is seen in a sitting posture, which has earned Him the epithet Asanamurthi. He is seen holding a conch and a chakra. There are two images under His feet, which are of the Sun and the Moon. Here, we don't see Goddess Lakshmi seated on the lap of the Lord. Instead, there is Her image on a pendant. There are Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma on either side to pacify Narasimha Swamy who was still in His ferocious form. The temple is hence called Trimurti Sthalam. The palm of his right hand has a tint of purple, which the priests indicate as the bloodstains.  Source It was before Namakkal Lord that the great poet and a devotee of Lord Vishnu, Saint Purandara Dasuru composed the famous song 'Simha Rupanda Sri Hari Namagirishane'.There are two other sanctums that house Lakshmi Narayana and Goddess Namagiri Tayar(Lakshmi). There is a temple dedicated to Lord Ranganatha(Vishnu) above the main temple. Read More
