Apollonas Kouros
The statues of Apollonas Kouros are located in Melanes and Apollonas, on the island of Naxos. Dating back to the 8th century, the Statue in Apollanas is a life-sized statue, about 10 meters in height. Some people are of the belief that the statue is devoted to Lord Apollo, others think that the beard in particular is a striking feature of Lord Dionysus.
The tall unfinished statue is made of light gray Naxian Marble. The statue is a kouros, a free-standing statue of a young man that originated in Ancient Greece during the Archaic era. Although it is incomplete, cracked, abandoned, and constructed of rough-hewn marble, the traces of the carvers' skill are detectable. The torso, head, beard, and ears contour is easily noticeable. If you look closely, you can see the holes that the sculptors' chisels, pickaxes, and hammers left behind.
