Mangalam Dam has been built on a tributary of River Mangalam and River Cherukunnapuzha for meeting the irrigation requirements in the region. The dam is a marvellous sight amidst dense forests. The wildlife thriving in the forest region can be spotted around the reservoir often. The region is quite a relief from the hustle and bustle of a city life and is a preferred picnic spot for many.

Meenkara Dam

Meenkara Dam

The Meenkara Dam is one of the reservoirs built under the Gayathri river project. The dam was completed in the year 1964 and is built across the river Meenkara, which is a tributary of the Bharathapuzha river. The earthen dam itself is about 934 meters long, 18.9 meters tall. The dam is used mainly for irrigation purposes, supplied to the whole Palakkad district through a network of canals. The dam is surrounded by forests and mountains, layering the view with more beauty. It is a great spot for a weekend getaway, or to bike to. It is mainly a picnic spot, with a beautiful view of the Meenkara Dam lake. There are also scenic parks and gardens developed around the facility, along with fish ponds. People also come from the city to buy fresh fish from here. The Palakkad Fort in Kerala is a beautiful historical monument that has gently integrated its high walls with its surrounding green gardens. One of the most well-preserved forts in the state of Kerala, the Palakkad fort was built in the 1766 AD by Hyder Ali and is now a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India. This picturesque fort is located in the heart of Palakkad town at the foothills of the Sahyadris range in a labyrinth of dense forests and crisscrossing cascading rivers. The mighty fort is spread over an area of 60,702 square meters and is immensely famous for its architecture, which displays the efficiency of the French craftsman. The magnificent fortress of Pallakad is an essential part of history, and its construction is majestic as wellThe fort is in the shape of a square and is supported by walls and bastions which are square shaped as well. Earlier, the entrance to the fort was via a drawbridge, which has now been replaced by a permanent one in its place. A significant ground is also present within the premises of the fort, which served as stable for the horses and elephants of Tipu Sultan's army in ancient times. It is placed between the fort and the Palakkad Town Hall and is known as the Kota Maidanam. It is currently used as the venue for cricket matches, exhibitions and public gatherings. There is an open-air auditorium here as well, which is known as Rappadi. The Palakkad fort also houses some other smaller attractions such as the Hanuman temple, Martyr's column, Anjaneya Swami Temple (a small shrine), Vatika Shilavatika (a garden) and a sub-jail. Pattambi Nercha is an annual feast and carnival of the Pattambi Mosque situated in Palakkad district of Tamil Nadu. The mosque is dedicated to the Muslim saint and pir of Malabar- Aloor Valiya Pookunjikoya Thangal, in whose memory the festival is celebrated. The festivities are a grand affair when the entire town comes alive and is lit up in electric bulbs and is decorated with tinsel and colourful strings. In addition to this, a grand procession is carried out with a 100 caparisoned elephants amidst a vibrant display of music, colours and avid celebration.
