Places To Visit In Panvel

Ballaleshwar

Ballaleshwar

The Ballaleshwar temple of Panvel is part of the Ashtavinayak (Ashta, meaning 8 pilgrimage places of Lord Ganesha or Vinayak, the Hindu deity of letters and learning). The temple, which is in the midst of a busy junction in Panvel has stood the tests of time and development, and turns 400 in 2014. The blue and yellow structure made primarily of wood and stone hardly resemble a temple, but is considered by Ganesha devotees and residents alike as the oldest, most special place of worship in Panvel. The temple houses many more deities, the most popular among others being Lord Shiva and Lord Ram. Read More

Bet el Synagogue

Bet el Synagogue

In the midst of a mix of rapid urbanization and village economics, in the centrally located Tapalnaka on Mahatma Gandhi Road nestles a small bit of Israel. The Beth El Synagogue is home to about 20 Bene-Israeli families in Navi Mumbai and the nearby Raigad district combined. It has been around since 1849, and is the only Jewish temple to have been so. Prayer services are held thrice a day, the first being the Arbith (Evening prayer) held after sunset. The Torah/ Sacred book is read every Monday, Thursday, and Saturday or on Sabbath (The Jewish believe God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh, so Sabbath is the day of rest). Though females are allowed entry into the Synagogue, they have a separate enclosure, entry to which is from the outside. The Rabbi leads the prayers on a raised platform facing west towards Jerusalem. Prayer services, held in Hebrew, involve reading from the Torah for which a quorum of 10 witnesses are required. Chanderi Fort

Chanderi Fort

Located in the Matheran district of Maharashtra, the Chanderi Fort is a historical monument which can be reached by taking a short trek to the hilltop. This day-long trek in the Kalyan area is a breather for people from Mumbai, Pune and the nearby regions, and the fort is as famous as the trek that leads to it. From the top of this ancient fort, one can view the surrounding forts of Prabalgad, Nakind, Kalavantin, Irshalgad, Karnala, Vikatgad, Mhaismal, Matheran, Haji Malang, Tavli and Navra Navri, and also the Western Ghats far behind in all their glory. This mighty fort is located near Thane in the Badlapur region, and interestingly, this structure is not really a fort! There are no fortifications at the site, but only water cisterns, rock cut steps and caves that denote that the historical site is indeed a fort. Chanderi Fort was captured by Shivaji Maharaj from the Mughal Sultanate, and ultimately it went into the hands of the British later on. This fortress is often used as a military base, or a hideout since the path that leads up to it is challenging and tiresome. The fort offers the best of both worlds and appeals to both history lovers as well as adventure enthusiasts since it provides visitors with breathtaking views, excellent historical information, as well as an adrenaline rush. Karnala Fort

Karnala Fort

Karnala fort also known as the Funnel Hill is a hill fort in Raigad district, about 10 km from Panvel city and 65 km from Mumbai. The fort is a protected property which is situated within the Karnala Bird Sanctuary and offers a great opportunity to enjoy a refreshing, easy trek. Karnala fort consists of two forts out of which one is at a higher level and other is at a lower level. The trek to the top of the fort takes at least 2 hours if you are in good health, and a little lesser while walking back down. The route is quite easy and not very steep, although it gets very slippery during the monsoon. For more adventurous trekkers, there is a short-cut to the top of the fort as well which reduces the time by about half an hour; however, this route is very steep and should only be attempted if you are comfortable with trekking. We would advise you to carry at least 2 litres of water per person on the trek and make sure you are wearing appropriate shoes. In the middle of the higher level is a 125 feet tall basalt pillar which is famous as Pandu's tower. This pillar served as a watchtower when the fort was occupied, however now it is in a ruined state. There is a water reservoir here which supplies fresh water all year long. From the top of the fort, Prabalgad and Rajmachi forts can be seen on the northern side. The fort has two inscriptions one in Marathi and the other in Persian. The Marathi inscription which has no date is seen on the lower gate on the inner side, and its words are indecipherable. The Persian writing on the upper gate reads Syed Nuruddin Muhammad Khan, Hijri, and is probably from the Mughal era. The Fort has a recorded history of having passed through the hands of Muslim, Portuguese and Maratha rulers. Read More

Manikgad Fort Trek

Manikgad Fort Trek

Manikgad Fort is located on a hill in Manikgad village of Maharashtra. The fort is about 1,878 feet high and is impregnable from three sides. The upper part can be reached only from the south. Presently the fort is ruinous and the village has been deserted. Trekkers are advised to travel in groups. It was not a fort in its true sense, but more of a checkpost sort of thing. Within the fortifications are the crumbled remains of a large stone gate and a flour grinder of made of stone. There is a small Shiva linga at the top alongside a temple with no deity inside. There are cisterns of water and a prominent reservoir within the fort along with some storehouses. One can still see a somewhat decrepit gate with the carving of Ganesha at the top of it. The fort presents a very commanding view of the valley surrounding it, with Karnala pinnacle and Prabalgad fort visible prominently. Read More

Prabalgad Fort

Prabalgad Fort

Prabalgad Fort, also known as Kalavantin Durg is situated between Matheran and Panvel in Maharashtra, at a height of 2,300 feet in the Western Ghats. The fort built at the peak of a rocky plateau very close to Matheran has become a major tourist attraction. A trek to this place is perfect for those who enjoy adventure and the way to the fort is a dangerously steep climb. The steps leading up to the fort are cut into the rock of the hill. Reaching the fort is one of the toughest trekking challenges in Maharashtra and only if you are an experienced trekker should you go for this trek. This trek which commences from the base village of Shedung takes about 3 hours and you need to climb rock-cut stairs through a steep slope. Reaching Kalavantin Durg is very difficult and this trek is for experienced trekkers. But for those who do go for this trek, be ready to touch the clouds and hug the wind and see the mountains around you as you reach the top. You can also explore other forts around Kalavantin Durg such as Karnala, Irshalgad, which have an interesting history and story linked to them. You can also spend some time near the serene rivers which are close to Kalavantin Durg such as the Ulahas River, Gadhi River and Patalganga River. Read More
