Buffelsdrift Trail Park

Buffelsdrift Trail Park

Located 15km north of Pretoria on the western side of Dinokeng, the Buffelsdrift Trail Park lies within the Buffelsdrift Nature Conservancy. The trail park is well-known for its wildlife, lush greenery and numerous trails. It boasts 10 main mountain biking routes, including Buffel, Nguni, Kudu and Rabbit, that are of different difficulty levels. There are 6 Enduro lines within the park which run down the same side of the mountain. Runners can also take advantage of its five main run routes: Supa 7, TT10, Fast 5, Tough 21 and Fitness 15. All the trails are adequately marked. Buffelsdrift Trail Park is home to animals like the Bushpig, Kudu, impala and zebra. Centurion Society of Model Engineers

The Centurion Society of Model Engineers is a beautiful green space in the residential suburb of Zwartkop. Formerly known as Meerpark, it is known for its train rides. It has a 2km long train track ideal for small steam trains designed mainly for children. The train passes by a serene lake, through tunnels and over bridges. Many small radio-controlled model trains are on display here that make noises and have lights that turn on and off. It is an excellent place for a family picnic and has barbeque facilities. The Ditsong National Museum of Cultural History is located on Visagie Street in Old Mint. It is often called a centre for living culture as it focuses on the country’s history and the lives of its people. It has objects, documents, manuscripts, records, publications and photographs of South African history. There are guided tours held both day and night. The Museum is most popular for the African Window, which takes a unique approach to documenting South African culture through dance, music, drama and other festivals. It has many other exciting exhibits, such as a Stone Age exhibit, an Iron Age exhibit, an exploration of space through the ages and a rock art exhibition. Faerie Glen Nature Reserve

The Faerie Glen Nature Reserve is a wildlife sanctuary situated east of Pretoria. It is famous for hiking, dog walking (a permit is required), picnicking (only picnic baskets are permitted) and photography. Bird watching is popular, with over 150 bird species found here. There are two wooden lookout points for the same. There are informal picnic spots around the reserve but no braai facilities. The reserve comprises the western part of the Bronberg conservation area, an endangered ecosystem that houses diverse flora and fauna. Gold Reef Mountain Bushveld and Marikana Thornveld, two types of vegetations, can be found here along with animals like hares, zebras, small-spotted genets, etc. The Moreleta Spruit flows through the reserve as well. Hennops Hiking Trail

Hennops Hiking Trail refers to many hiking, driving and biking trails from Haeda camp along the Hennops River and into the surrounding mountains. The routes are popular for historical sites, rich wild and plant life, and unique river crossings. You may cross with a suspension bridge or a cable car. There are three main hiking trails. The Dassie trail is the easiest and shortest trail, measuring 2 kilometres and with an elevation of 70 metres. It leads to the Pruimpe and Dassie caves. The Zebra trail is slightly longer at 5 kilometres and of average difficulty. It is famous for sighting the indigenous bird Bokmakieries and other animals like Zebras, Gnus, Impalas, Zonkie, Kudus and Blesboks. The most challenging trail is Krokodilberg which extends up to 10 kilometres and has an elevation of 400 metres. This trail leads to the Pruimpe and Dassie caves, various viewpoints, Dolomite mines and various game animals can be viewed along it.Apart from these, the Zonkie trail can be traversed by any 4-wheeler. It is famous for the picturesque route and sightings of the diverse plant life and Kudu, Zebra, Blou Wildebeest and Blesbok. It is a very easy drive with many inbuilt detours that allow you to avoid obstacles. The Hennops MTP trail is a 40-kilometre bike trail with various options that will enable you to customize the experience to cater to you. Jan Smuts House Museum

Jan Smuts House is the preserved home of the former Prime Minister of South Africa, Jan Smuts. It is located in Irene, about halfway between Pretoria and Johannesburg. The house has conserved the life of Jan Smuts through pictures, furniture and artefacts. Smuts’ extensive and well-preserved library often attracts visitors. The house was initially a prefabricated wood and iron officers’ mess in Britain, from where it was taken to India, where Smuts purchased it. The Oubaas trail located onsite makes for a marvellous hike of 2.3 kilometres. There is a Place of Quiet dedicated to the byvoners found here when Jan Smuts purchased the home. There is also a small memorial to Prime Minister Smuts, a restaurant, antique shop, paintball and laser tag arena and a tea garden onsite.
