Magnolia Dell

Magnolia Dell

One of the most beautiful parks in Pretoria, Magnolia Dell is located in Bailey's Muckleneuk between Queen Wilhelmina, over Mahomed Street. It is known for its lush greenery consisting of over 250 magnolia trees and colourful flowers. The Walkerspruit creek inside the park has a statue of Peter Pan. Magnolia Dell is perfect for walking, jogging, picnicking along the creek and taking photographs. It is also widely visited for its magnolia flowers that bloom every year. In addition, one can grab a bite to eat at its tea garden or at the restaurant called Huckleberry’s. Melrose House

The Melrose House Museum is housed in a stately Burgers Park Pretoria mansion. It was used as a military headquarters during the Second Boer War and is where the Peace Treaty of Vereeniging was signed. It still houses the table on which it was signed and has a copy of the treaty. The building is a testament to the shift from Victorian to Edwardian architectural styles. It is known for its stained glass windows, ornate ceilings and fireplaces, beautiful carpets and paintings by English artists, porcelain ornaments etc. It is a National Heritage Site established towards the end of the 19th century by the businessman George Jesse Heys. Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve

The Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve is famous for its diverse flora, fauna, and magnificent views. It is situated in the eastern part of Pretoria in Gauteng. It is an excellent place for bird watching, hiking and conducting photoshoots. Picnicking, dog walking, guided hikes, group activities etc., are not permitted at the reserve. The reserve, formerly a farm, is home to numerous birds and animals such as ostriches, zebras, impalas, springboks and more. There are three hiking trails, namely Rademeyer (1.5km), Suikerbos (3.32km2.89km) and Duiker (2.89km). The first is wheelchair friendly, while the second and third are medium to hard and medium difficulty levels, respectively. Standing 9 metres tall, it is the tallest statue of Nelson Mandela in the world. It is located in the exact spot where Mandela was instated as South Africa’s first democratically elected President and was unveiled 10 days after his death, officially bringing the mourning period to a close. Pretoria Art Museum, located in Arcadia, is renowned for its collection of South African art. The City Council has curated this collection since 1930. They collect, document and conserve South African art and host international and national travelling exhibitions and educational sessions. There are over 3000 pieces on display with well-known artists such as Anton von Wouv, Frans Oerder, and Irma Stern, as well as contemporary artists like Judith Mason, Sam Sam Nhlengethwa and Lucas Sithole. The museum’s exhibition features works from its permanent collection of artists who taught or studied at the University of Pretoria between 1986 and 1992. Roodeplaat Dam Provincial Nature Reserve

The Roodeplaat Dam Provincial Nature Reserve, originally called Pienaars Rivier Dam, is located northeast of Pretoria on the shores of the Roodeplaat Dam. It is also an outdoor recreation facility popular for several water activities alongside its wildlife. Over 250 species of birds, including Black herons, Hammerkops and Ospreys, can be seen here, making it ideal for bird watching. Game viewing is popular here since the reserve has animals like zebras, kudus, warthogs, black-backed jackals and more. It is an ideal place for walking or hiking owing to its many trails and picnicking since picnic tables are on the southern banks of the dam. The southern banks are better for water sports like sailing, canoeing, freshwater angling and fishing. There are a few basic campsites on this side of the dam. Each shore has its entrance. Zita Park is a public park located on Zita Street in Garsfontein, Pretoria. It has sprawling lawns surrounded by trees, ideal for walking and picnics. There is a playground for children with jungle gyms, slides and other equipment. A shallow swimming pool within the park with a small slide is perfect for children.
