Malgund

Malgund

Malgund is the native village of the famous Marathi poet, Kavi Keshavsoot. The poet's house, which is now converted into a student's hostel, is open for visits. The village also houses a memorial to the poet, built by the Marathi Sahitya Parishad.

20 km away from the town of Ratnagiri is Pawas, a place where Swarupanand Swami took his samadhi. Affectionately known as "Appa" or "Rambhau", Swami's original name was Ramchandra. Born on 15th December 1903, Swami undertook self-immolation at Pawas and also resided here for for 40 years before that.  Born to the couple Vishnupant and Rakhmabai Godbole in Pawas, Swamiji has a neatly maintained memorial, which used to be his residence before he undertook self-immolation on 15th August 1974. Guru Purnima and the day of Swami's Samadhi are regarded as significant days in Pawas. His residence is now converted into an ashram which is used as a lodging and boarding facility for devotees. Surrounded by Arabian sea on three sides, Ratnadurg fort is a structure in a form of horseshoe as wide as 1000 meters and as long as 1300 meters. It is spread over 120 acres and was once a strong hold of the Maratha empire later to be occupied by Mughals. It gives you a splendid view of the sunset and Arabian sea with the shore waves screeching in your ears making it a memorable trip far from the city hustle.

Established in 1985 by the Marine Biological Research Station, the Marine Museum is famous for its specimens of the Sea horse fish, Lion fish, Trigger fish, Sea turtles, Star fish, Lobsters and sea snakes. The separate freshwater aquarium section is home to local species like prawns, crabs, turtles and aquatic plants.

Sri Kanakaditya Temple

Sri Kanakaditya Temple is one of the few temples situated in Maharashtra that is dedicated to the Sun God. The main idol installed here is over 800 years old and is made out of the black stone, while the structure is made out of mud and laterite stone. The temple comes to life during the Rath Festical, when a silver chariot is taken out for religious processions.
