Museum of Craft and Design

Museum of Craft and Design

The Museum of Craft and Design, famously known as the MAD, is another prized possession of San Francisco. The museum was envisioned by Aileen Osborn Webb, an American Art patron and philanthropist, who is credited for founding The American Craft Council. Established in 1956, the museum was created in an attempt of acceding and upholding the artists, designers and artisans from the contemporary and alternative art and design arena. The museum, however, went through successive transformations and numerous location changes, finally adopting a newer outlook of providing a cross-disciplinary approach to art and design, thus allowing for a creative space to be woven with auxiliary aid of education and industry. The museum actively organizes workshops and exhibitions providing an educational platform for the aspiring art practitioners.  The Open-Studio program of the museum creates a distinct learning environment allowing the visitors to engage in discourses and reciprocal discussions with the artists themselves. MAD also happens to incorporate an art jewelry gallery along with a restaurant and theatre for art installations. Read More

Ocean Beach

Ocean Beach is San Francisco’s prime destination for surfing. Its long history of being inhospitable has paid off and its powerful waves are a hit with experienced surfers. However, the ocean at the beach is too dangerous for casual swimmers even with wetsuits and lifejackets, in most cases. However, it is a great place for families and dogs to just relax and enjoy the view. The areas towards the Golden Gate Park is more popular for regular bonfires. During very low tides, you can even see some parts of the ship King Phillip sticking out in the stands. The harsh waters of Ocean Beach have caused many ships to run adrift onto its shores. Check out the Cliff House, a renowned restaurant overlooking the site of the former Sutro Baths. It also houses the historic camera obscura on the deck overlooking the ocean. The former Sutro Baths are the ruins of one of the world’s largest indoor swimming pool. If you wanna get away from the hustle and bustle of the big city but still want to enjoy the beaches, Ocean Beach is the place to go! Read More

The palace and the lagoon were restored in 2010 and today has once again become a favourite place among locals.
