The palace, earlier situated atop of Narendra hills in Sawantwadi belongs to the erstwhile state rulers called Khem- Sawant after whom the village takes its name. This palace was constructed during 1755-1803. Later, Khemsavant III constructed it on the grounds near the hills. The ruling family along with the present Queen-mother H.H. Satwashiladevi still reside in the palace. The Queen takes a keen interest in the growth and sustenance of local arts such as 'Ganjifa Art', Woodwork painting, lacer work which goes back to the 18th century. Other items like wooden boxes and bracelets can also be found in abundance. Raghunath Market of Sawantwadi houses some of the best Konkani handicrafts. The market is at least 150 years old and sells silver and bronze wares, jewelry and Kolhapuri chappals. It is also known for its collection of unique Konkani delights like Agul, Amla Juice, Kokum Sharbat and dried fish. Another interesting feature of Sawantwadi is the special way in which the Ganjifa cards are played. This version is a three player game with the Dashavatar set containing 120 cards.
