Elephant Falls, located near Shillong in Meghalaya, is one of the most picturesque natural waterfalls in Northeast India. Named by the British due to a rock resembling an elephant near its base, the rock was destroyed by an earthquake in 1897. The falls are a three-tier cascade of crystal-clear water, making it a popular spot for picnics and photography. The 'architecture' of Elephant Falls is purely natural, formed by a series of three beautifully layered cascades. The first layer is broad and hides the subsequent falls from view, leading visitors down a flight of stairs to the second, more intense waterfall. The third and most secluded layer cascades gently into a clear pool below, surrounded by lush greenery and accessible via a footpath. - Wear comfortable shoes as you will need to walk down stairs to reach the falls. - Visit early in the morning to avoid crowds and capture the best photographs in soft sunlight. - Carry water and snacks as there are limited facilities near the falls. - Be mindful of the slippery rocks and stairs, especially during the monsoon season. - Respect the natural surroundings by not littering and keeping the area clean. Elephant Falls is located approximately 12 kilometers from Shillong, the capital city of Meghalaya. Visitors can easily reach the falls by taxi, which is the most convenient option. There are also shared taxis and buses available from Shillong to the nearby area, from where a short walk will take you to the entrance of the falls. Parking is available near the site for those driving their own vehicles.Overview of Elephant Falls, Shillong, Meghalaya
