Jaintia Hills

Part of the former Jaintia Kingdom, the Jaintia Hills is a land of majestic hills filled with rich natural vegetation and mineral deposits. It is situated in Meghalaya and is part of the Patkai hill range that extends across the Indo-Myanmar borders. A relatively smaller hill district as compared to the Khasi and Garo Hills, the Jaintia Hills still amazes travellers with its pristine lakes and lush greenery. Jowai, the administrative headquarters, is the most developed town in this region and is the only place connected to other towns outside the hills. The Jaintia hills comprise of two districts: the East Jaintia Hills and West Jaintia Hills. The Jaintia Hills is home to one of the most beautiful waterfalls of India, the Krang Suri Falls. Set against the backdrop of the rugged rocks with the verdant creepers and trees, the unreal shade of blue taken on by the water inspires the artistic side of anyone who views it. The beautiful village of Nartiang is also situated in these fascinating Jaintia hills where one can find the remnants of the Summer Palace of the Jaintia King. Jakrem

Jakrem

Jakrem is a famous hot water spring of sulphur, located about 64 km from Shillong. Popular as the land of hot springs amongst the locals. Jakrem is blessed with sulphur springs believed to have curative medicinal properties. The site has slowly developed into a health resort that is visited by people from far and wide to take a dip in the hot spring and spend some time detoxifying themselves. Jakrem is also a favourite picnic spot in the region during the winter with bathing compartments built for the public. Khasi Hills

Named after the Khasi tribe of Meghalaya, the Khasi Hills are part of the Garo-Khasi range, and a part of the larger Patkai hill range, a series of hills found across the Indo-Myanmar border in the northeast region of India. With deep lush valleys and conical peaks, these hills are famous for housing the Sohra or Cherrapunjee scarp, one of the regions with the highest annual rainfall in the world. The Nongkhum island, the second largest river island of Asia, is also located within this spectacular area. The dense forests mingling with tributaries that eventually drain out into the holy Brahmaputra, combined with the rich biodiversity of the region has earned Khasi Hills the title of 'Scotland of the east'. The Khasi hills were divided into the East Khasi Hills and West Khasi Hills in 1976, with the Ri-Bhoi and South West Khasi Hills Districts being formed afterwards. The picturesque capital of Meghalaya, Shillong, is the district headquarters of the East Khasi Hills district, and the most developed town of the region. The Khasi Hills are a great convergence of lush forests, endless verdant grasslands, majestic hills surrounded by playful clouds, waterfalls and rivers flowing through the creeks, and ancient monoliths loaded with mystical caves. Kyllang Rock

Some 78 km away from Shillong, a unique giant rock made out of red granite, Kyllang Rock is a giant dome placed in the West Khasi Hills of Meghalaya. The Rock which is 5400 ft above sea level and has a width of around 1000 ft is a mammoth block of granite which is part of the Khasi folklore and seems beautiful in its shape. A hike to the top of Kyllang Rock allows you to treasure the marvellous landscape of the surrounding area. Surrounded by age-old Red Rhododendrons, Kyllang Rock is said to have a special magnetic field that makes sure that people don't fall off it. The mammoth dome is inaccessible from its southern side whereas the northern side is full of rhododendrons and bushes. Rock climbing lovers flock to Kyllang Rock to test their skills and enjoy some unhindered adventure. Trekking to the top of the rock takes around 30 minutes but the view from the top is worth it. Located conveniently in the Laban area in Shillong is the popular Lady Hydari Park, named after the first lady of the state and wife of the Governor of Assam, Lady Hydari. The first thing that catches your eye when you set foot in this park is that it is built in the form of a Japanese style garden. The vibes get stronger when you catch a glimpse of the round-shaped hedges, willow trees with leaves touching the ground as well as the many scattered small ponds. There is also a small lake where one can find ducks and colourful fishes. Tourists of all age groups visit the beautiful Lady Hydari park and stroll on the paved walkways in the evenings, exploring and admiring the beautifully manicured lawns with an alluring collection of orchids and rhododendrons. During winters, one can visit the park during the afternoon and relax in the lawn area. It is an ideal place to visit with children because there is a nice playing area for them. Perched on the East Khasi Hills, Laitlum Canyons is a less explored but one of the most picturesque tourist and trekking destinations in Shillong. The canyons are located about 21 Kms south of Shillong which is about a half-hour drive away. Literally, translating to 'End of hills', this exotic viewing site offers the best panoramic views of the whole of Meghalaya embraced by the majestic hills and valleys. The spot is secluded and serene, ideal for quiet and peaceful getaways. It can be visited by families, friend groups as well as couples. To catch this place at its best, visit Laitlum Canyons either during sunrise or sunset. One has to hike for about 2 minutes via the shorter route or more than that via the longer route to reach Laitlum Canyons. Mawjymbuin Cave is situated in Mawjymbuin village in Mawsynram (the wettest place on earth) in Cherrapunji and is a religiously significant site. Made of calcareous sandstones and having numerous stalagmites (formed as a result of calcium carbonate depositions, weathering and dripping of mineral enriched liquid), the 209-metre high cave is of special interest to geologists who conduct special researches here. The Mawjymbuin Cave is also thronged by naturalists, photographers, pilgrims and tourists alike. A rock shaped structure arising from the earth, shaped like a shivalinga is the primary attraction of Mawjymbuin Cave and is highly revered by Hindus.
