Nohsngithiang Falls
The Nohsngithiang Falls, located at a distance of about 4km from Cherrapunjee, is one of the tallest waterfalls in India and a major tourist spot in Cherrapunjee. Since it is situated in the Mawsmai village of the East Khasi Hills District of Meghalaya, it is also known as Mawsmai Falls. The Nohsngithiang Falls falls from a height of about 1033 feet, segmented into seven different sections, giving it the epithet of Seven Sister Waterfalls. The scintillating waterfall is seasonal and plunges over the limestone covered hills only during the rainy season.
The Nohsngithiang Falls or the Seven Sister Falls is symbolic of the seven sister states of the North East of India namely Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland, Tripura, Mizoram and Meghalaya. The mesmerising waterfall cannot be entered into but creates a spectacular viewpoint to view the surrounding beauty of Mawsmai. The beauty of Nohsngithiang Falls is indescribable during sunset when the rays of the sun fall on it creating a perennial rainbow, which is also one of the major highlights of the place.

Police Bazar
Police Bazar is the major market of Shillong, and a popular shopping haunt for locals and tourists alike. In addition to an array of restaurants, hotels and big brand stores, the Police Bazaar also has a flea market section which is pocket-friendly and draws the maximum number of tourists owing to its traditional handicrafts stores, exquisite Meghalaya merchandise, regional apparels, junk jewellery and the like. The colourful market is thronged by shopping enthusiasts as well as foodies.
Police Bazaar, also known as Khyndailad is the prime shopping hub in Shillong and the ideal place to book a hotel if you are travelling to Shillong. The bazaar is a blend of traditional as well as modern, the chic as well as classic. The extensive collection is why people choose it over Bara Bazaar. The markets are well laid out in the form a huge circle (chowk) right in the middle of the police bazaar with plants and trees, surrounded by 7 roads going away from the circle to the different points in the city. Many roads in Police Bazaar do not allow vehicles, which makes them an excellent stop for street shopping.

Rhino Heritage Museum
Located in the Bara Bazaar area of Shillong, Rhino Heritage Museum is dedicated to the army personnels, military weapons and war missiles and rifles. The museum gets its name from the pink coloured rhinoceros sculpture installed outside the premises. Among other exhibits, the highlight is the display of the weaponry of the Japanese army.
Built in 1928, it is believed that the site of the museum is where the Japanese prisoners of war were kept imprisoned. It was later on built and renovated by Lt. Gen Shokin Chauhan, the director general of Assam Rifles. The Rhino Heritage Museum has distinctive galleries and photographs showcasing not just military paraphernalia but also depicting the local culture.

Shillong Peak
At the height of 6449 ft or 1965 m above sea level, Shillong Peak is the highest point of Shillong. It offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the entire city, the Himalayas, its waterfalls as well as of the Bangladesh plains. A telescope is available for tourists to get a bird's eye view. Trekking up to this semi-circular Shillong Peak is highly recommended for the best views but it is often bounded by heavy fog.
It is said that Shillong gets its name from the Shillong Peak itself. Regional tales tell that the patron deity 'Leishyllong' resides in the hills and protects the city from all evils. The U Shulong site at the top of the peak is sacred and every spring, a ritual is organised there. The Shillong Peak is situated at the air force base and features a radar station of the Indian Air Force. Due to security reasons, heavy checking is done at the gates, and tourists are asked to deposit their cameras.

At 1343m above sea level, an ideal location to meet nature. Sohpetbneng means 'navel of heaven' in the local language and is truly heaven - with the breathtaking view of Shillong it offers.
Spread Eagle Falls
Located in the East Khasi District, 6km from Shillong Cantonment, the Spread Eagle Falls are considered to be the widest in all of Shillong. The scintillating waterfall is also known as Sati Falls or Urkaliar because of the belief that Ka Liar slipped into it. The majestic waterfall gushes down steep hills, towering three sides into a massive pool of water which is ideal for the tourists to sit and longe by. The Spread Eagle Falls, which looks an eagle with its wings spread wide (hence the name), is a popular picnicking site amongst the locals of the region.

Sweet Falls
One of the steepest and the most mesmerizing falls of the country, the Sweet Falls is located about 5 km from Happy Valley in Shillong. At a height of 96 metres, it is often touted as the most stunning yet most dangerous waterfall. The route to the waterfall is not maintained and is quite treacherous, surrounded by slippery stones resulting in some tragic stories. Unlike the tiered waterfalls of Meghalaya, the Sweet Falls a thick rush of water falling from a great height making it impossible to stand below or take a bath in the falls. Ironically, Sweet Falls is believed to be haunted by the local populace - they believe that if people visit the site in odd numbers, they return back in even numbers.
The Sweet Falls of Shillong is a popular picnic spot surrounded by verdant greenery and filled with the sounds of the chirping birds. There is also a butterfly museum a mini zoo near the waterfalls. There is a railing at the site of the waterfall but it is too weak to lean on. The Sweet Falls has been marked a danger zone by the local government as it has been the site of some tragic deaths and suicide in the past. These tragic and haunted stories have resulted in less tourist traffic at Sweet Falls which might be seen as a blessing by some people (they get to enjoy the beautiful surroundings in comparative serenity).

Umiam Lake
Umiam Lake, a mesmerizing man-made reservoir, is located at a distance of 15 kilometres north of Shillong which is the capital of the north-eastern Indian state of Meghalaya. The lake was formed after a dam was constructed to generate hydroelectric power. The scenic Umiam Lake is encircled by lush green East Khasi hills that form one of the best panoramic sights for nature-lovers in the country. The sunrise at the lake is a treat to watch and shouldn't be missed. The Umiam Lake has a park adjoining it which is a hotspot for picnics and frequented by locals for a getaway from their busy schedule.
The serene lake or the reservoir is surrounded by thick coniferous forests and expands over an area of about 222 square kilometres. Students and nature-lovers can admire the flora and fauna at Umiam Lake as they study the science behind the dam, children can spend some time in the park with their parents, visitors can take a long boat ride in the lake, and adventure lovers can enjoy boating and various water-sports. Apart from the tranquillity that Umiam Lake has to offer, one can also observe the daily life of the natives who come to the lake in search of twigs and grass or the fishermen canoeing in the still waters. In summers, the shores are adorned by beautiful Gulmohar trees while in winters, the water level recedes and turns azure.

Ward's Lake
Lying in the centre of Shillong city, the Ward's Lake, an artificial lake surrounded by a prolific green garden, is a major tourist attraction around which the entire city has been planned. Also known as Pollock's Lake, the mesmerising lake is a popular picnic spot amongst the locals and travellers who come here to simply walk around the horseshoe-shaped lake or sit and admire the stunning flowerbeds throwing a myriad of colours.
In the middle of Ward's Lake is a small bridge created to enable the visitors to have a panoramic view of the entire lake or feed the tiny fishes floating around in the water (puffed rice is available at the entrance of the lake for feeding the fishes). The major highlight of the lake is definitely the paddle boating. The Ward's Lake is named after the Chief Commissioner of Assam, Sir William Ward, who initiated the construction of this lake. Since Ward's Lake is located centrally, you can easily reach it through any means of local transport.
