Emerald Hill Road

Emerald Hill Road

Breathtaking architecture, quaint shophouses and beautiful heritage buildings make Emerald Hill Road one of Singapore's hidden gems. The tree-lined boulevard with trendy bars and terrace houses (which Emerald Road is most famous for), makes for a picture postcard neighbourhood - a verdant stretch standing in stark contrast to its immediate neighbour, Orchard Road, which is one of Singapore's main shopping areas, always full of hustle and bustle. It is worth walking by for those visiting Orchard Road. Emerald Hill Road is littered with professional photographers as well as amateurs, all of whom are captivated by the exquisite and elegant architecture splashed all along this frangipani scented Road. The quaint pastel-shaded road has a colourful and tumultuous history, involving Chinese immigrants, English settlers and for a major part, Peranakan settlers. Influential Peranakan settlers bought houses along Emerald Hill Road, and this influenced the culture and architecture of the Road greatly, giving it the beautiful terrace houses it is now famous for. The essence of Emerald Hill Road lies in the structural design of its terrace and shophouses, all of which were built in the early 1900s and reflect the beauty and grandeur of that age. The large mansions with their majestic frontage, intricately carved wooden decorations and extraordinarily big entrance gates work together to transport the visitor back in time. Many visitors discover the architectural beauty of Emerald Hill Road, when they wander, almost by accident, onto this tranquil road with its quirky bars, colonial terrace houses and red-bricked souvenir shops. First Generation Sculpture

First Generation Sculpture

The First Generation Sculpture is a major tourist attraction which adorns the banks of the Singapore River near the Fullerton Hotel. It is one of the rarest pieces of art, portraying five boys playing by the bank. It has beautifully captured the essence of the carefree days of the first immigrants of Singapore by freezing the motion of the boys about to jump into the river, naked. In the former days, swimming in the river was a common pastime. The Singapore River was but a huge swimming pool, and the residents had the time of their lives in it. This life-like sculpture is a revival of the fun-filled days of Singapore as it used to be earlier. In the words of Michelangelo, 'Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it'; and indeed, what a breathtaking sculpture was envisioned by the famous Singaporean sculptor, Chong Fah Cheong! He saw five boys in bronze and did not stop carving until he set them free. The dynamic First Generation Sculpture was unveiled on the 31st of December, 2000 and has remained at the same historically significant site by the riverbank till date. It was created as an honour to the immigrants of Singapore and to remind the present generation of the former in the economic as well as social development of this proliferating city. Read More
