State Russian Museum

State Russian Museum

The State Russian Museum houses one of the biggest collections of Russian fine arts in the world, rivalling the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. The museum was established in 1895 by Nicholas II in remembrance of his father, Tsar Alexander III, and was opened to the public three years later in 1898. He used the Mikhailovskiy Palace as the main building of the museum, and the museum today is the curator of many other imperial buildings in the city, such as the Summer Palace of Peter I, Marble Palace of Count Orlov, St. Michael's Castle of Emperor Paul, and the Rastrelliesque Stroganov Palace, and these sites are regularly used for various temporary exhibitions. It displays one of the finest collection of Russian artwork, dating back to the 11th century. The museum's collection was boosted by the revolution, when several paintings from personal collections and other museums were transferred to it. The museum does not have different rooms dedicated to different time periods, and all the artwork from over the centuries is displayed collectively. Read More

Summer Garden

Summer Garden

The Summer Garden is a splendid garden area that was designed by Peter the Great himself in 1704. Located at the intersection of the Fontanka and the Neva rivers, the Summer Garden is a thing of true beauty. It is one of the most scenic and oldest gardens of St. Petersburg and indeed Russia. The Summer Palace is also adjacent to the garden. The garden is popular among couples and people looking for some leisure time. The garden had actually been damaged quite considerably in the 18th century during floods. Over the years the park had been neglected and it's condition deteriorated. However, major renovations in the late 20th century restored the park back to it's initial glory days. There are a total of 79 sculptures, dating back to the 17th and 18th century that are placed thoughtfully all over the park. There are also numerous fountains, and the entire park is spectacularly arranged with trees and flowerbeds, enhancing the aesthetics greatly. Read More

Winter Palace

Winter Palace

The Imperial Palace of St. Petersburg and the residence of the Tsars. Today it is the main building of the Hermitage Museum. The Winter Palace is the single most popular building in St. Petersburg. It has the richest of imperial histories, and still holds all of it's grandeur from it's glory days. The palace design we see today was completed in the 1760s in the Russian Baroque style, and is a piece of genius by the architect Bartholomeo Rastrelli, who's magnificent works are seen in many imperial buildings of St. Petersburg. The palace is in the shape of a square, with a courtyard in the centre. Inside, it has nearly 1500 rooms. The Hermitage collection was always housed in the Winter Palace, however today it has become the primary reason for the millions that visit the palace everyday. The banquets, rooms, galleries and the intricate architecture inside this massive palace just cannot be missed. The imperial glory of the Winter Palace was restored after the fall of the communist regime, and you have not visited St. Petersburg without visiting the Winter Palace. Read More
