Masjid al Akbar
With beautiful turquoise tiled domes and contemporary architecture, the Al Akbar Mosque immediately warrants everybody's attention. Being the second-largest mosque in Indonesia, the Masjid also has a tall minaret which offers a bird's eye view of the beautiful Surabaya cityscape. The minaret soars 99m into the sky, and its height is an allusion to the 99 names of Allah.
Masjid Al Akbar is truly one of the most impressive mosques in Indonesia. One can surely catch a glimpse of the watery and turquoise styled domes while exiting the city. The staff around are amicable and will happily show you around the beautiful minaret to get awestruck by the spectacular view. The attractive and unique feature of the dome is that it almost resembles a half egg!

The Masjid Ampel was built in 1421, by Sunan Ampel, one of the nine revered saints of Islam in Indonesia. Being one of the religious attractions of Surabaya, what makes the Masjid Ampel different from other mosques is the beautiful fusion of Javanese and Arab architectural style of the building.
Monumen Bambu Runcing
The Monumen Bambu Runcing or the Pointed Bamboo Monument is a structure representing three upright bamboo spears surrounded by beautiful fountains and a garden with flowers. It is one of the major tourist attractions in Surabaya and particularly looks gorgeous at night when illuminated with lamps and floodlights.
Sharpened bamboo staffs were fashioned during the Battle of Surabaya when conventional warfare weaponry and arms were hard to come by, and soldiers used these makeshift spears to fend off the enemy. The bamboo spears came to symbolize the indomitable spirit of the freedom fighters, and the monument was erected to honour it. The monument is located in the heart of Surabaya and is in close proximity to Surabaya Zoo, Surabaya Plaza, and other attractions.

Monumen Gubernur Suryo
Situated in the province of East Java, the Monumen Gubernur Suryo is located around a small park. The statue was constructed in honour of the first governor, and a national hero, of East Java, Governor Soerjo. It is quite stunning at night when illuminated. You will come across the statue many times while on touring the city as it is located in the city centre.
The governor was kidnapped by rebel Communist forces in the year 1948 and was murdered thereafter. The monument was erected in 1975 to memorialize him. A park that contains more than 20 different types of plants has also been built around the monument. The park's facilities include a pavilion, an information room, a mosque, and a playground for the children.

Monumen Kapal Selam
The Pasopati, a Russian submarine was commissioned into the Indonesian naval in 1962 for the Aru sea battle, to liberate the locals from the Dutch occupation. Now, known as Monumen Kapal Selam, it houses a museum which takes you deeper into the history of the Dutch rule in Indonesia and the struggles of locals through movie screenings & the striking interiors.
Monumen Perjuangan POLRI
The Monumen Perjuangan POLRI was built to memorialize the efforts of the Surabaya Special Police troops during the freedom struggle. The monument also has plaques and has inscriptions that educate visitors about the happenings of November 1945. The Special Police forces were instrumental during the seizure of Indonesian independence from colonial powers and played a central role during the Battle of Surabaya.
The recently renovated Monumen Perjuangan POLRI is a great place for street photography or to dig deeper into the history of Surabaya, the Monumen Perjuangan POLRI is situated in the province of East Java. Located in the heart of Surabaya city, it has recently been developed with some lighting work and a small garden around it as well.

The Museum Kesehatan Dr Adhyatma MPH is a famous museum existing in an old building from the pre-independent Indonesian times. The Museum Mpu Tantular is located in Sidorajo and is also known as the state museum of Surabaya. Museum Surabaya
The Museum Surabaya or the Gedung Siola, as is known locally, is one of the oldest building in Surabaya having great historical value. Located in the East Java province, it was initially used as a defence structure which was later converted into a museum, showcasing old government and hospital equipment and various other artefacts.

Interestingly picturesque, the old town of Surabaya is filled with old buildings and interesting souvenirs. The oldest part of the city, that dates back to the 16th century, in which every building is at least a hundred years old, is a must-visit for any tourist.
