Suroboyo Monument

Suroboyo Monument

This landmark sculpture in Surabaya depicts a tussle for supremacy between a shark and a crocodile and is a symbol of Surabaya's strength. The statue holds special significance for the city of Surabaya, especially in light of the fact that the city got its name from the Javanese words for shark and crocodile, 'suro' and 'boyo' respectively. The two beasts are symbolic of the warring armies of Raden Widjaja and Tar Tar during 1293, after which Surabaya as a city was established. A skate park can be found just beside the monument and is a big attraction for teenage skateboarders in the city. The Ten November Museum represents a memorialization of the happenings of the 10th November struggle. 10th November is celebrated as 'Heroes' Day' in Surabaya and is dedicated to the soldiers who gave up their lives for independence. The museum showcases weapons which were used in the Battle of Surabaya while also providing plenty of information about the history of the Indonesian freedom struggle. Located underneath the Heroes' Monument, the museum was built to explain the significance of the Heroes' Monument. The museum and the Heroes' Monument is dedicated to the soldiers that lost their lives during the Battle of Surabaya. Soaring for over 40m into the sky, the venue becomes the site that hosts the processions that happen every 10th of November. The Tomb of Dr Soetomo is one of the cultural heritages of Surabaya. It was built to honour Soetomo, a doctor, a politician, and a national hero of Indonesia. He is known to have played a central role in the battle of Surabaya and was also known for his powerful and emotion-inducing speeches. Dr Soetomo was instrumental in the role he played in inciting a sense of patriotism amongst the Indonesian youth using public radio. During the Battle of Surabaya, when colonial forces attacked the metropolis, Soetomo rallied forces and troops with his fiery and impassioned speeches and galvanized the country.
